    Scale Plans built P-51

A friend of mine came into possession of an old fiberclassics P-51 that had a J'Tec "scale" exhaust system on it. He bought a Keleo system, and gave me the old stuff. I couldn't make it work the way it was originally designed, so I did a little work, drilled it out and hammered in some brass...

    Scale Plans built P-51

Finished the fillets and they turned out ok. For those of you who remember some of the older kits from the late 70's and 80's (before laser cutting was even thought of) there was a lot of "carve and cut to shape". Well, I guess that I'm stuck with that mentality. I piled wood onto the plywood...

I cut and dry fit 25 pieces of triangle stock. Some of it was cut from a 1 x 3 balsa plank.

Building the wing fillets. Will post a couple of pics along the way and show the results. The €%#¥£ radiator was a real challenge. I'll take some pics of that too.

    Robart Electric Retracts

I think they are. Except for the catch between the frame and the yoke, they worked great. If it hadn't been for the fact that the catch stalled the retracts when I put wheels on them I could've lived with it the they were. Hopefully Ill get them back next week.

    DLE 85

That's great! I'm glad you like it! I'm just about ready to fit mine to the P-51.

Thanks! Tore the flaps and ailerons apart over the last couple of days and rebuilt them. Got them right this time. Hinged the ailerons last night. Getting close to finishing up the construction part of the project. Still waiting on Robart to return my retracts. When they get back, I'll be...

    Scale Plans built P-51

After all the work, the measuring, the calculating, when I went to hinge them, the angle from the inboard edge to the outboard edge was off. Like way off. So, tonight, I spent all my time cutting the flaps apart, sanding down the LE and reassembling them so that they fit within the TE of the...

Here's the right aileron and the right side of the flap. Lots of work.

    Scale Plans built P-51

Wow! I thought that I would build the flying surfaces in a couple of hours maybe 3. I spent all Sunday afternoon and only got the left side done. The angles and shapes are very difficult to replicate accurately and have to match each other. As I build the next set, I'll take some pictures.

Thanks. Building flaps and ailerons now.

    Scale Plans built P-51

After sheeting the bottom of the wing the tolerance between the hatch and the sheeting is quite good. That's because I squared the hatch before I installed it. Then I laid sheeting along the top and bottom. That leaves only the sides to present an issue for a clean install. My secret is to...

    Scale Plans built P-51

This is the first servo tray I made. The 1/2inch square hardwood goes through the 1/8inch 5-ply plywood. I used triangle stock to support it.

This pic shows the servo lead tube that I put in. You can order these tunes from several different sources, but these are homemade. I took some old Monocote tubes and sliced them lengthwise with a box cutter. Then, I rolled them until they fit inside the holes in the ribs. When you release...
