Help With Motor Timing and Poor Throttle Response (Gecko 120HV)

What was the conclusion of this? Is there a better firmware? I have a 150A Opto that's been sitting on my desk for a year that I just put into my 71" Slick as replacement for a Castle Ice that gave up the ghost. The throttle response is, well, less than impressive. I programmed the highest...

    Throttle weirdness

Well, I'll be darned! Looks like the BEC is to blame. I plugged a 6.6V LiFe straight into the receiver and the problem went away. Plugged the BEC back in and it started acting up again. Oh well, looks like I'm running a receiver battery in this one. For now, at least!

    Throttle weirdness

Good idea! Although it would require me to find the programming card somewhere in my insane mess... :) I'll go check if I can find it...

    Throttle weirdness

My bad, it's a Castle Creations Phoenix Ice 100A in that plane and it's rated for up to 8s.

    Throttle weirdness

Yes, it's two 4s in series. The BEC sees the full voltage, i.e. wired to the same terminals as the ESC.

    Throttle weirdness

I just can't seem to catch a break these days. Thought I should re-maiden my rebuilt 71" AJ Slick. It flew just as wonderful as I remembered, except... Whenever I'm at or near full throttle and move any control surface quickly, the motor stutters. Aileron, rudder or elevator. Doesn't matter...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

Huge trade show hosted by the big software company I work for (VMware). Of very limited interest if you're not in the IT-business, though... Moose works for one of our customers and went last year, but I had to go back east before I could buy him drinks. Trying to remedy that situation this year!

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

Yeah, I think I'll try that. On a completely different note: Are you making it to VMworld this year? If you are and have time, drinks are on me!

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

The PowerExpander Pro. Probably about 2 years old. Came with the plane...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

One theory I have is that since this happened just after I put cans on the plane, there may by some heat buildup inside the fuse that causes the problem. Head temp clocked in at 262F after a normal flight and I think the cans may get even hotter. Maybe there's heat transfer up to the...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

I told you it was a nitpick! :) If the kids and wife will leave me alone today, I'm going to run the power through a wattmeter and see what my draw is. I'm expecting it's not that high, because I could only see 0.2V sag when I held down a control surface and moved the stick. Something...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

(Nitpick) It's only partially true that higher voltage always means lower amps. Servos are usually rated for higher torque on higher voltages, so for the same torque, yes the current if lower. But not if you max out the servos, since the max torque is higher. I have 7 Savox 1270TG (4 aileron, 2...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

So there's basically two things that can cause a loss of unregulated power without loss of regulated power: One is a faulty power distro and the other is a short in a servo or servo connection, provided that the SmartFly has some kind of over-amp protection on the unregulated rail (does it?)...

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

OK, I have a powersafe receiver sitting in a plane I'm not flying right now, so that would be an easy swap. BUT... it doesn't solve the problem! If I replace it without reproducing the problem, I still won't know if it's fixed. I don't want to experience those two seconds again. It's going to...

The I'm going out flying thread 2016

Summary of the day: Ripped out the gear of my Aeroplus 76" Edge in a dumb thumb in a torque roll. Browned-out my 104" AJ Slick and almost crashed it. Spent the rest of the day trying to reproduce the problem. Not the greatest day at the field. :(

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

Oh, and one more crucial piece of information: Receiver is an AR10000 with three satellites and the tx is a DX9 Black Edition.

Radio brownout - Lost another pair of underwear (and confidence in the plane)

I keep having issues with my 104" AJ Slick. This time I had a radio brownout/loss of power/something. Lost all control for about 2 seconds and got it back just in time to save the plane and brought it in for a twitchy but successful landing. And now I have zero confidence in the plane. The...

    Deadstick and close call

This is my favorite deadstick landing ever. Full scale Cap loses prop in a flat spin and pulls off a textbook landing. Go to 5:50. There's a lot to learn from this!

    Deadstick and close call

No, it was a case of a loose cowl. It must have shook loose and lodged behind the spinner backplate. The CF spinner backplate and the front of the cowl were ground down. You can hear and see how it's losing power in the upline and finally dies when I reduce the throttle. If you watch fullscreen...

    Deadstick and close call

Yeah, I lost a lot of energy trying to turn it around and back to the runway. The thing is that there's a lot of rocks and bumps under that grass and I would probably have pulled the gear out if I attempted to set it down there. Always easy to play Monday morning QB. It was the best I could do...
