    60" Laser-EXP

Haha... I met an old guy at the field the other day and he said he was finally going to upgrade to 2.4GHz and asked me what radio to get. I handed him my DX8 and asked him to check if he liked the feel. He was about to go get one, but just as I was about to leave he asked me "Hey, where is the...

    Aerobeez 90" Extra 330SC (50cc)

Did I misunderstand something? I thought the problem was that he couldn't measure the power consumption because he had a hard-wired series connector. He could hook up the wattmeter between one of the batteries and the series connector. That should give him the correct current reading, but only...

    Aerobeez 90" Extra 330SC (50cc)

Put the watt meter on one battery and multiply the reading by two. The current is the same but the voltage doubles. It the batteries are of equal quality and charged to the same voltage, you should get a reasonably accurate reading that way. Probably within the margin of error of the watt meter...

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 (50cc)

Time for some throttle servo! The kit comes with a nice seat for the throttle servo, but to make the geometry work, I had to mount it on a piece of 5/16" plywood. I just epoxied it to the plywood. I screwed and epoxied down the seat, but since the screws attaching the seat to the plane are...

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 (50cc)

Permanently installing the engine, I used fender washers behind the firewall. As is common on these types of models, I had to trim some of the washers with my Dremel cut-off wheel. Next, I started cutting the cowl. I used some painter's tape to avoid chipping. Starting to come together...

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 (50cc)

The firewall is nicely marked for a DLE55/DA50. Four holes and some bolts and I was able to dry fit the engine. It's really nice when everything is already measured and pre-marked for you! So far it looks like a perfect fit!

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 (50cc)

The plane is nicely boxed in double heavy duty boxes. Looks like you could run them over with a truck.

Some supply guidance on starting into balsa plane(s)

Looking around in my man cave... A good soldering iron (Weller if you can afford it. I have the Radio Shack digital soldering station and it's great as long as you immediately replace the junk tip it comes with) Rosin core solder. You want a low temp solder when you solder deans plugs etc. A...

    Lipo vs Li-Ion

I'm not sure I agree that's the safest method, Moose. You're basically assuming the battery is useful all the way down to full discharge and subtract a single safety flight from that. I would personally add more margin of error than that.

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 v2 (50cc)

So I've finally settled on the setup for this plane. It's gonna be awesome. How about this? Engine: DA-50 with side dump exhaust Servos: Savox SV-1270TG all around. Servo arms: Spot-on all around. Radio: JR-12222 Powersafe. IBEC: Tech Aero. Batteries: Dual Glacier 2s 2200mAh LiPos...

    DA-50 Side dump exhaust question

I'm trying to fit a side dump exhaust in my Aerobeez 88" Slick, but it would require me to pretty much slaughter the cowl. However, if I could cut the pipe just an 1/2 inch or so, it would fit perfectly. Would I affect performance if I cut the pipe on the side dump? Are they tuned in any way?
