    Scale Plans built P-51

I told one of the first guys that asked me to do this that I didn't feel adequate for the job. Tonight, I took a giant step in proving that. There's a plywood top that runs from F2 to F6. It's not square of course as the fuselage width tapers to the tail. Not a big deal. I drew a center...

    Scale Plans built P-51

All I got done tonight is installing F2. It took a lot of time and measuring, and thinking and redoing but in the end, I think I got it straight. And that's kinda important.

Here's F2. The plans designer said that this is the hardest part of the build and all I can say is that I sure hope so!! I figured out that in order to get it in the proper position I had to attach the hardwood pieces to the back of the former with wood screws then put it in place between the...

    DLE 85

Hey, Truck: I've read some of your postings on the "other" forums. My engine came from the factory since the first of the year, so I'm crossing my fingers that they got the message and fixed it. If not, I'll try to fix it, and if that's not successful, then I'll get a replacement. I know that...

    DLE 85

The last couple of posts are the same thing that I posted on the build thread. I've decided to mount this engine on a test stand and run it up. When I do, I'll post a video. Probably be sometime this next week. S

I decided that I will run it on the test stand. I'll set it up the first chance I get and post a video. S

    DLE 85

Here's what I do. The caveat to this is just that, it's the way I do it. If any of you have input or suggestions or want to correct my procedure, please do so. We're all in this to learn and to enjoy this great sport. After removing the spark plug and the cylinder head bolts, the cylinder should...

    DLE 85

The first pic is me pulling the engine out of the box for the first time. I've been told that I have huge hands (I can palm a basketball) if that gives you a perspective on the size. The second picture shows the insides after I removed the 4 cylinder head bolts. That was no easy trick as the...

Ok, back to work on Gunfighter! Ive been thinking about that. I have a test stand and if I can get a little help, I might fire it up. It'll be next week because right now we're in the middle of a winter storm warning. But by Monday it will be back in the 60's. If I do, I'll post a video...

I'm excited now! My engine arrived today and I'm impressed. Monster of an engine. Not many bigger single cylinder power plants like this even made. Like I said in one of the earlier posts, the first thing I do with a new gas engine is to order a Bowman ring for it. This one is no different...

Oh stink!! I came home and instead of a DLE 85 on the porch there was only a door tag saying I had to be there to sign for it. Signed the tag and hung it back out. Better luck tomorrow.

My DLE 85 is on the big brown airplane truck for delivery today!! Sometime tonight, I'll unbox it and share that with all of you. Also, I'm going to replace the stock ring with a Bowman. I'll take a couple of pics while I'm doing that just in case anybody is interested. That is some...

    Scale Plans built P-51

I think you're right. All of the top and bottom of the nose of this plane are planked. Only the side pieces "bent". BTW - I said I had made a mess out of the bottom rear part of the fuse trying to cut and bend those pieces to shape. Lat night I went back and soaked them for several minutes...

I hope so. I've never done this before, so I'm just kinda going through and talking about what I'm doing. I wouldn't have even considered doing it on RCU or even RCGroups. Too many hateful, critical people. So far, I love this site and truly enjoy the conversations that I'm having with my...

Heres F1, rough cut and ready to finish sanding to get the curve right. That's what the front side pieces have to form to. Come on guys, it's been a couple of hours and nobody has come up with a procedure for helping with the bend.

Here's what I use for stripping balsa. It's just a small piece of 1 by, that I dressed on my bench sander and then rounded the edges. That's just a #11 x-acto blade and a couple of servo screws to hold it where I want it. Very simple, very useful.

Making a compound curve out of a square piece is a difficult task, and one that if you're not careful, could result in fracturing the sheeting. The plans call for making 1/16 inch deep cuts in the side sheeting to facilitate the bending process. I did this on the tail and it didn't work out...

Here's the business end showing the installation of the plywood side-doubler (MS). I've laminated F1 and am waiting for it to dry. The instructions say to have the engine on hand because it's critical that the 2 sides stay absolutely square while bending them around F1 which is round. Right...
