    Scale Plans built P-51

Man, I'm telling you, it's tough!! I think there's a barn off the north end about 4-5 miles away. The old hangars are really close - 1/2 mile south and 1/4 mile the other side of the runway. Really, there's no power lines, no trees, no towers, no roads - nothing, but lots of sky. Believe it...

We fly at the old Abernathy municipal airport. We were flying there while it was still an active airport, beginning back in '06. Today it's closed and we share it with a truck driving school. Works great for all of us. This was just a picture of the flying stands, but you can kinda see a...

BTW - I didn't get to work in the shop much today, because I spent so much time FLYING!!! An absolutely beautiful day, temp around 73 and a pleasant south wind at ZERO. Now, tomorrow is supposed to be a high in the 40s with a 30-35 mile an hour wind gusting to 40!!! What the crap?!?! Oh...

The next thing to do (I think) is to cut the front of the former F1. If you enlarge the pic, you can see the line that I've drawn. After I cut it out, then I can finish the sides. I've got a plan for how to do this. I ran out of glue and energy all at the same time.

Here's a shot of the process of putting the sheeting over the formers. Took about 2 hours to do the whole thing

    Scale Plans built P-51

Here's a pic after I put the formers in place. One of the issues with plans like this is that the pieces cut from the template sheet don't always fit the plans. Or my cutting is really lousy. I had to sand off some of the formers and add some balsa to one of them to even out the edges.

Now it's time to start working on the lower cowl. I've been putting this off because I didn't know how to do it. I just couldn't see it. I'm still not sure it's going to work. I won't know until I cut it apart. I am sure that it's going to require a lot of work to actually fit and be secure...

Here's what F3b looks like set in place with the 60* triangle stock. Sure made that an easy install.

I've made a couple of mistakes that cost me time and money. Both of them just from not paying attention. But you know the story about the blind squirrel that occasionally finds an acorn? Sometime back last year, I needed a piece of triangle stock. I was in Hobby Lobby with my wife and looked...

    DLE 85

I'm going to run this engine again later this week. I have to come up with a more suitable way to secure the test stand in order to do this by myself. I'm going to tune the engine and after a tank or 2 of fuel through it, I'm going to take rpm readings both a idle and at top end. Also, I...

    Scale Plans built P-51

John and I mounted and started the DLE 85 this evening. I just posted a video and some of my initial thoughts on this engine. It's posted in the gas engine forum under the DLE 85 thread.

    DLE 85

Based on my very limited experience with this engine, I have to say that so far, I'm impressed. Started very easily, and even though we didn't run it up to full throttle seems to have loads of power. John said, "you're going to have to build a bigger plane!" I hope not. The p-51 is about as...

    DLE 85

Yea!!!! I finally figured it out. I should edit the video but that will have to be another self-taught lesson. Watch the short video first. It shows me trying to start it and leads into the next vid where we close the choke and fire it up. We didn't make any effort to adjust the needles...

I've got a video of the startup of this engine but I can't upload it. I'm still trying.

    DLE 85

Aside from changing the ring, I didn't touch the engine. I mounted it on the test stand with the carb settings exactly the way they came from the factory. We went through the standard startup procedure that's recommended for most gas engines: choke closed, throttle set to WOT, ignition on...

    DLE 85

Like I said earlier, the first thing I did was to replace the stock ring with one by Frank Bowman. My experience with these rings is that they improve every aspect of the running condition of the engine. Better idle, smoother transition, higher top end. And the longevity is such that I've...

    DLE 85

Ok, my brother came over to help me with the new DLE 85. The setup is quite robust with the mount being made of 3/4 inch plywood mounted to a steel tool stand. Just to be on the safe side, we took 2 cinder block and strapped them to the stand to make sure the engine thrust wouldn't turn it over.
