91" SkyWing ARS 300 Assembly Thread

Been scratching my head which throttle servo to use PM DS305 or Savox 1267. I’ve heard mixed feelings on every brand and shoot... I’m just going to pick one and fly it. Found a servo box in my collection, modified and painted it, added some anti-vibration tape in it, and epoxied it in place...

Could be a factor for sure. Lots of tail draggers handle differently with large bush tires. The geometry changes in relation to the CG and the tail will be less responsive on the tail and will walk away from you. Maules have quite the short coupled tail and ground loop easy with a less...

More like two days worth of flying... but still!!

The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

What did I do? Not enough!!! Need more shop time!!!! One plane being built, one with a vaporized bullet connector, another with CG rearrangement shinnanigins. Plus I’ve got another with a busted cowl, and one with a busted prop. Ha ha. I guess this means I’ve been flying??

Relocated the fuel tank back as far as it would let me. Soon realizing my batteries needed a better spot... made a balsa shelf for each battery while adding a little fuselage structure. Win win. Hopefully I’ll have time to fly it tomorrow!

    3DHS 75" EDGE 540 V2 Assembly Thread

As an electric setup, My CG was about 1/2" behind the wing tube, had to add 3 oz of sticky weights in the tail and two 6S 3300-3700 lipos up front butted up against the wingtube, which gave me 4min of 3D flying.

    3DHS 75" EDGE 540 V2 Assembly Thread

Looks like the motor connector plugging into the ESC vaporized. But why? The other connectors don’t show any signs of arcing. And the bullet connector was left inside the ESC receptacle. Sounds like a bad solder joint, internal resistance at 50v could get hot and vaporize that sucker.

    3DHS 75" EDGE 540 V2 Assembly Thread

Well had my motor do a loud chirp today when punching out of a maneuver at low altitude. No throttle, prop windmilled. Barely made it back, had to skid turn to slow it down and pooped it on next to the runway. Looks like a connector got very hot, there is splattered solder on the inside of the...

    110" TIMBER Assembly Thread

Yesterday I ended up with 1.5 Oz on the tail. 3oz today and it flies better. Tightening up the rudder springs helped a ton. Still think they are too weak. I have to really be on the rudder to prevent a ground loop, especially on landings. Moving the fuel tank under the wing tube will be my next...

It hasn’t blown my socks off yet. My OAW is up there for sure. CG will be key, and will make or break any plane. It flies pretty well. I did not like my stall test result, but once again CG can change that. I like the plane, don’t get me wrong. Just need to fine tune some things before I REALLY...

Got some goodies from Tim at NWRC. Blue fuel dot so I can finish my fuel line routing. Then slapped a coat of polyurethane on the firewall to preserve it. Finished setting up my wing and tail linkages at neutral. Need to bust the protractor out now. Still need to set up my throttle...

Okay, so wires crossed, outer control horn holes, and a offset arm that is about 3.4" bolt to bolt.

Thank you!! So the maiden. I had a good friend taunting me to fly it and get the maiden out of the way lol. ok ok. To my surprise I didn't even have to touch the DLE55 needles, It ran well, a little rich on the low end but just gurgly. Skies were calm with the occasional light rotating gust and...

Plane has flown four times today!! I’ll get the full report when I get time. It’s a bit nose heavy. Flies nice. Low rates and flying circles, no 3D yet.

I saw that too. I don’t know how they can get the correct geometry with that setup. I’ll have to look back in the other posts, but I crossed the wires and used a 3-3.5” offset arm

91" SkyWing ARS 300 Assembly Thread

Been working on my wings now. One thing I’m learning about skywing carbon planes is the carbon is very thin. Think of it as a carbon vernier over thin ply. If bonded correctly it is strong and light... however it’s not very good under compression. Look the plane over by pressing on the surface...

Skywing even includes a fuel tank vent line fitting. How neat is that!?! This polyline goes on soooo much easier if you warm it up for a couple seconds.

I have the Ender 3 and the CR-10S. The ender 3 is a small CR10. It’s a perfect size for what we do. I would definitely recommend it. Lots of online help and upgrades for it. But it prints great right out of the box.

3D Printed ignition holder done. Printed it slow for better quality, ended up at 4.5hrs. But it fits like a glove! Unfortunately it’s too wide to mount on the firewall. So on the engine box it goes. Marking mounts now.

Setting up the tail. Rudder Control Horn inner hole is 1.5” and the servo arm is 1.5” fun fact... if you set up your dual rates and leave it on low rates you’ll chase your tail wondering why you don’t have the throws.... duh! 2” elevator arms, 1.75” hole. Lowest hole on the elevator control...
