The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

Programming gliders for thermals does intrigue me. I really need to get my butt in gear and finish my DLG and start learning about hunting thermals and understanding how the glider reacts to the rising air. Id be afraid of loosing a sloper of a mountain here. immanent death if you try to...

The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

Sticks are glued in place. Far from perfect but the important parts are aligned well. That was a lot of work. But that’s ok... because I opened up my door and saw 3-4” of new snow on my truck just now.

Not too shabby for venturing into the unknown world of scratch build modification. Need to notch to make some room for the 1/4” balsa sticks. Makes some lightinging holes and glue away.

I have some Boeing F4-B4 1/6 scale (60") plans from RCM that an old aircraft mechanic friend of mine and was basically a mentor for me beginning my A&P carrier as an aircraft mechanic. He gave the plans to me, saying it was his favorite plane and always wanted to build a model of it. He wasn't a...

    GP 76 twin gas engine

Talk about dangling the carrot... I’d really like my first 90” class airframe to have one of these. 94” MXS would be a match made in heaven for that engine. Although I really like the 92” V2 edge.... But then lasers.... Lions tigers and bears!!! Oh my! The suspense is killing me!

The blue prints are coming together. Little factoid, the otter when turbonized added 5.08 feet to the planes OAL. That’s a 10.8% increase in length!! Puts me at a 7” increase to the nose. I’m thinking of just plugging some balsa formers every two inches with 1/4” sq balsa along the outside...

I’m going out flying thread 2019

And wait all day to fly because the club member that decided to show up that day had ch57 and would not let you even turn on your transmitter until five hours later when he left... the last one there... let me leave my stuff at the flight line, drive away to the gate, lock the gate and turned a...

Rewriting some plans to make the super otter. Boy does that nose stick out and they had to! It’s so much lighter than the radial they extended the nose super far out. One mfgr had to add ballast to the engine (PT6)after they had extended the nose lol. Anyways, finding a good reference for how...

I’m going out flying thread 2019

I'm feeling it too guys. This last week we got over 14" of snow. Switched to RAIN for a couple days, and the last two days have been dense fog, currently 1/8SM visibility. After the huge drop of snow (in two days!) my flying buddy snowblowed the runway so we could go flying... then it rained...

Some times you just gotta step away and let your garage door open because it smells like CA and balsa dust. Third day/afternoon playing with otter and it’s starting to take form. I forgot how addicting a stick build can be. I can’t leave it alone!! But I must!! Lest my sinuses will hate me.

To be honest, the radial otter was a terrible flying airplane. The turbonized super otter is what made it what it still is today. The sound of a prop twirling around will sound close to a turbine. I will need to make some floats somehow for it though.... I’m going to mimic a specific color...
