AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

Just like with most cowling jobs, you can use a piece of paper as a template. I taped the paper down, and cut out with an xacto knife the exhaust holes, folded it back, removed the exhaust, but the cowling on, marked the holes, removed the cowling and installed the exhaust... knowing that the...

AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

So there it sits! Now for the cowling! I love using a pencil and a dremel tool for this part. You can usually feel what part hits first as the cowling starts to come on, in this case it was the spark plug. Mark it with a pencil and start making small cuts/holes and enlarging them as you go...

AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

Engine Installation: I ended up using the Desert Aircraft DA-35 Engine with a J-Tec DA35 Pitts Muffler (regular). As always, fuel proof the firewall as best you can. I just used 30min ZAP epoxy and smeared/rubbed it into the wood grain on the firewall. Some folks prefer to thin it out using...

    New Build Help

I have been thinking about the same top two aircraft your looking at. Seems like the EF Extra 300EXP is the choice airframe. Although as Bipenut just said, I'm probably going to go for the 60" Extra 300. Also the MXS seems to be a faster airframe... not to throw another plane in the mix, but I...

What's up with all the spam this weekend? I got some flights in on Saturday. Too cold for my internal combustion engines... about 26 degrees or so with fairly high humidity. But flew some foamies around, did some warbird dogfighting/chasing/formation flying with a couple Eflight P51's. Fun...

    SupaTim with his 3DHS Bigfoot

Kind of forced to go electric with that plane though.

Bummer. I wonder since the DX6 is identical to the DX7 other than a rotary knob and a three pos switch (and +$100), there may be an input for a rotary knob already integrated on the circuit board... hmmmm

    SupaTim with his 3DHS Bigfoot

He has a VVRC40 in the cowl? What ever happened to this model... 3DHS is making little foot's but there seems to be a demand for the big foot and they are not aren't making them???

I know Arron Bates has played around with switches, all I have found is on/off style toggle switch changed to a push button so far.

Has anyone converted a two/three way Tx switch to a rotary knob? Thinking about swapping it on a DX6... I have a feeling the radio wont allow it. Anyone?

AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

I remember the large size costing a bit more as well and a bit harder to find. I thought someone used the large size, I don't think the dB dropped much with a tiny drop on the top end. With that said, I haven't really found anybody using this one yet. Let me know if you do! Noise was an issue...

AJ Laser 230z 73" Build Thread

I don't recall if anybody has used that setup on this particular airframe. I thought about doing it, but It seemed that the cost outweighed the benefit for me personally. The Pitts Muffler from J-Tec is pretty much the go-to muffler. You can find people using a header and canister or pipe of...

Thanks for the input, Kinda curious what people think of the 3DHS Extra 330 LT 61" as well.

Good to know, Thanks! Any other airframes I should consider in the 60" electric range?

Looks like a fun one to me! I have never had any ExF airframes before, or an MXS for that matter. The problem is shipping them to Alaska... Maybe Tim with Northwest RC will be able to fill the void a bit??? How well does the MXS fly in high alpha or torque rolls in your opinion? Thanks

At least she's okay with your new gasser! I still need to finish my AJ Laser before I think about another gasser. I've been contemplating a 64" ExFl MXS and making it my largest electric plane... for now of course. Need a machine that wont freeze your fingers off warming it up in the winter time.

Azhar Osmanbhoy owner of Aztech Aeromodels Tribute

Sad News. He called me about an order one time, Item was out of stock, but managed to find what worked instead. Pleasure to talk to on the phone, and I always appreciated how fast his company was (is!) when it came to shipping and customer support. Prayers headed out to his family and friends.
