Discussion The I’m going out flying thread 2018

Did the maiden flight on the Multiplex Mentor last night. I need to locate a canopy still but otherwise it flies great. I also need to prop up, the 13x4E is too little prop for the motor. It's rated to handle 400w/40 amps and I'm barely sucking 20 amps out of it, thinking a 14x7E should do...

It's been a fairly productive few days. Aside from having to dig up and repair one of our water mains :oblong: I completed an older Multiplex Mentor from a load of parts I had on hand. Just need to find a canopy now. And I gave the old XTM Mammoth a spit shine yesterday since it was filthy...

Discussion The I’m going out flying thread 2018

Well aside from weird south winds form the Hurricane in the gulf, it was a great weekend. Both the 105 and 115 Lasers got flown, and I even managed to get the parts I needed to run the old XTM Mammoth  This engine is really weird, it screams on power but there's hardly any smoke...

Thanks for the advice, I've been on and off the past 15 years. My tuning advice comes from several individuals, one of whom has his name on a large number of race spec engines, none of them have told me to tune these engines as rich as possible. Generally I will richen the tune a couple of hours...

Looks great, now FLY IT!! :yesss: Spent a little time in the shop last night cutting up the bodies for the TMaxx and Revo to try and get more air flowing to the engines. The Revo had a small hole in the front, but the TMaxx had no holes to let air through, so I opened up holes front and...

Use the small cotton ones with a strip of one-wrap, slip it over your covering iron, then secure the sock to the handle with the one-wrap and you now have an instant iron sock :)

Help! Anyone own the 104" AJ Slick?

I'm using real bonded washers from RTL Fasteners, they tend to stick to the paint when they've been tightened down for a while. A little heat with a heat gun to warm them up (not get them blistering hot) helps them un-stick real quickly.

It's the only way to jave real fun with cars, and not spend $1300+ :epic: For cleaning nitro cars after running them. Cleans dirt and grime right off. https://www.amainhobbies.com/dynamite-nitro-force-cleaner-dyn5505/p71647 Not needed on airplanes really, since they don't play in the dirt...

Help! Anyone own the 104" AJ Slick?

At least it's an easy 2 minute fix :way_to_go: By the way, not sure if you're using the bonded washers on the cowl, but I've found that it helps to blow hot air on the bonded washer to help it 'unstick' from the paint on the cowling- if you are using them that is. I've chipped the paint a few...

Help! Anyone own the 104" AJ Slick?

This is just my lousy $0.02, but it's also pretty easy to do so take it for what it's worth, but you may want to consider slapping some black creative foam over the top of the baffles to close up the gaps between the cylinder heads and the edge of the plastic baffles. It would keep air from...

I blame it on Terry Wiles, the guy has many tricks up his sleeve. You should see how many sheets of the stuff I keep around, not to mention dental syringes, childrens cotton socks, tubes of red RTV, carbon tubes/4-40 rod, and other little miscellaneous things here and there- all just to build...

Baffling is extremely important, with it you are forcing more cooling air over the cylinder heads in flight than they will ever be exposed to running wide open on the ground, even just the bare engine itself. I have all of my engines baffled, and as shown, chainsaws and leaf blowers, weedeaters...

Gasoline engines have zero cooling from the fuel, unlike glow/nitro engines, so break-in is exceptionally hard on the engines. The only way to ensure adequate cooling is to actually fly the engine- no harm will ever be done to a brand spanking new gasoline engine if it is flown within its first...
