Scale 50% scratch build Sorceress

MattyMatt: Trying to keep this constructive here, please bare with me.... I was thinking hot wire foam core wings, but instead of sheeting with balsa, monokote, painted panel lines and rivets... that I would just sheet the foam with aluminium. This is the tried and true method used to make the elevator on some full scale planes I've seen. At that point I can score the aluminium with panel lines and use a small tube and hammer to mark it up to look like flush mount rivets. Due to the gull shape of the wing I was thinking aluminium brackets similar to the ones used to build ultralight sailplanes and hang gliders to bolt together carbon fiber hockey sticks to form the spar. I'm a student for life and am always trying to learn something new as I know I have a long way to go before I can claim "Evil Genius" LOL This is my first large scale scratch build and want to make sure it's as successful as possible. Can you please elaborate more or point out where some of my plan may turn out less then ideal?? I'm looking for constructive advice here :)

Cbarnes: Yup... lots of taping. The plans are 8 pages tall and 15 pages wide. Took me a week of free time just to get the first page done. I'm just glad there were only 2 pages to do. These are the plans for a .46 size plane that the AMA had in it's archives. I plan on using them to make templates for what I need, gives me good dimensions that are a proven flying model, and a good starting point for CG.
Tried and true building techniques can be so boring, like staying within the box, let yourself go and be creative.....

Wow what a project! Cindy (aka Firefly) and I visited that museum and saw that airplane in person

very cool, good luck with it if I find a picture of it I'll post it here.

It might take her a little time but she will find a way to get this done. She is a very talented lady.

Can you post the basic specs of the plane and engine ideas you are thinking of?

Sorry it's been a little bit since i've been on here...

Some basic specs so far.. to be 50% scale i'm looking at an 8' wingspan, 8'8" long, 32" tall, spinning a 34" prop.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the Smithsonian archives department about some information. This could "I think" easily be balsa/monocote light weight and powered by 100-150cc engine in a sport-scale type of thing. One of the full scales claim to fame is it set the 200mph record in the biplane class. I think it would be cool if I could match that with the scale project,... so need more engine, and structure that can take the punishment. Hence building with aluminium. It also has a 4cyl engine, so I instantly started thinking about a DA-200, DLE-222, and of coarse a 3W-220. There is another option out there that i've been looking at, and it's very interesting to me... Authentic Scale (maker of the radial) has plans on a flat "Lycoming" engine that if it fits and power is good, may be the best thing for it. As it is now... the shop is clean, build table is ready, plans are in the works as I won't be building true to these enlarged plans... it's just a blown up .40 nitro plane. Don't think piano wire landing gear will do ;)

Everyone else... Thanks for the encouragement. It's appreciated!! :D

See I told you she would figure out a way to make it happen.

Back in the mid 90s I built this all carbon fiber Cobra, but I wish I would have spent my time building a larger Sorceress instead, much prettier airplane. Anyway, the very best to you on your build.
