Scale Byron Glasair Build

TonyHallo

150cc
Well I set the Champ aside for the time being and got the first coat of primer on the Glasair. I use a 1/2" pipe with the flange on one end to hold and rotate the fuslage and cowl. The flange is bolted to the engine mount, there is a wood donut supporting the cowl at the spinner opening. The glass work is very good and there are few pin holes, of course the parting line needs a little work. After two coats of primer, the parting line was block sanded and re-coated, this took care of 90% of the problem areas, need to fill the rest. I'm using U-pol Dolphin for these areas, never used it before, we shall see.

You get extra points for the Vega with a roll cage in the background.;) Even more points if it's an Astre!

I've been trying really hard to talk myself out of buying a Byron P-51 that's for sale in our club. I need it like a hole in the head.
But at the same time I really want it.:lol2:

It is a 1971 Vega with a 1996 LT1, T56, Ford 9" rear. I quit flying RC some 21 years ago to build it. I was going real well until I could not find a windshied then lost interest in getting it painted. Found a glass about 9 years ago, logged 2300 street miles since then. It's not a race car.

Have to ask of all the cars to choose from why a Vega that must have been the most difficult car to put a big V8 into and especially into a unit body car. That must been a difficult job to keep it from winding the body in a pretzel.

Ever hear of a Monza, the wife had one when we got hitched. I hated working on that thing being I was use to trucks, Chevelles, and Novas…. But once I jacked it up a couple hundred horses it was hell on wheels, yea, literally as well. One summer it never saw anything other than slicks, Johnny did not like that though...

I've been considering a similar set up to what your using to hold your fuselage for priming. Normally I just stand then on the firewall on a can, but the Ultimate I'm working on is much longer than the 60cc airplanes I'm used to painting. I may use an engine stand if I can remember where mine is.:face-palm:

I learned many moons ago when I painted my first airplane that how you set them up is extremely important. The sheer number of parts can be a bit much. The Ultimate has 24 separate parts that need to be painted.o_O
