Hello stinger,
So, what I did to start out with was to measure one of the cans where it has that higher step. 75mm or 2.95’’. Out of the 12x12 by 1mm thick carbon sheet I cut out four, 4x4.5 pieces. (McMaster Car #818K12). You can see from the picture that the cutout is off center, this was to match the centerline of the cans coming out of the headers. I used a 3.25 hole saw at work on a regular drill press. You will have to put something under the sheet as you are cutting it or it will bend on you as you are pulling down on the press handle , Do NOT ask how I know this, LOL. I used a low grit flat wheel to clean the edges.
I made the rubber pieces out of a material we use here where I work at John Deere. Some of the electronic components on tractors are very close the exhaust pipes and they also need to be isolated for vibration. Funny thing is I can get it but I can’t get any info on where the Engineers get it from. Some kind of trade secret, LOL. It is 3/8th thick so I cut some small pieces of 3/8th bass wood to go between the sheets and that is also how they are bolted to the frame. This set up turned out way better than I thought, I’m able to slide the cans in and out without taking the mounts off.

By the time I get enough time to build one of these, I'll be too old to fly one. I need to find a different line of work, or something. I know enough to know something like this takes a special kind of skill. I could probably develop it, but I know I don't have it now. But I like these sort of threads.

I'm with you. As much as I like building, I know my own limits. That and the fact that ARF's are so much cheaper will keep me from ever attempting something as grand as this build.I would like to think I could do this, but the part that scares me is putting the wing and stab tubes in there respective pieces. The other thing is getting the sheeting to stay glued. I haven't built anything from scratch since I built my 4 star 60 and that was a long time ago
But it's still fun to sit back and watch!

Well I have to be honest, after building the 118 I didn’t think I would build another one, but then about a two years ago I made a HUGE mistake, actually three of them, I flew a Carden Pro with a 150, one with a 170 and one with a DA200. I just knew I would own one someday. (OH and one with a DLE 222). So, I went for it again and I’m glad I did. One MUST have patience when building and I have learned a great deal working on it. Skill level can be argue, just as with anything else but, if you have built kits before you already have the skills to build one of this. I think the size is the intimidating part of it. Are there other easier kits to build? And the answer to that is yes. The guys at J-tec have an interlocking set up for their frames, same with Dalton kits; they go together fast and straight. After the frames are built the rest is very similar, sheeting foam, shaping LE, TE, gluing sockets in the foam. The best part is you can always find help; ask lots and lots and lots of questions (right Ty?) LOL. As of right now I have about 230 hours on it since I got the kit. I would suggest starting out with a 50cc kit with foam core wings but I’m not sure if there are any available.
So here is where I am so far. I got the stabs sheeted this past weekend; I cut out the root end cap out of 1/8 inch aircraft ply using a template. I also cut out the stabs LE and elevator TE from the 3/8 stock that comes with the kit.
