the balance between quality and price is struck when you guys log on here. for the new guys, speak up and ask questions. for the more experienced folks, pass along what you've come to know. the free exchange of information is the great equalizer!

there's nothing wrong with considering an inexpensive chinese RC engine if you're thinking about trying out Giant Scale RC. But ask about the particular one you're considering as they aren't all the same, most suck but there are a few worth trying as a first big gasser. same with planes, electric motors/ESC's, servos, batteries, radios, etc.

ask the folks that have been there and done that. if anyone says they all suck, just ignore them. if anyone says buy whichever one you come across first, ignore them too. somewhere in the middle is the answer and from there you can go about getting started.

a lot of people have learned on inexpensive stuff (with the help of some worthwhile guidance) only to go on to more expensive equipment when they were ready. (but don't be afraid to step into the mix and ask a bunch of questions. if anyone tells you to stop mucking up the site and do a search, that's not site policy. maybe get started in the beginners' lounge with the basic stuff but feel free to post new threads asking questions. it's how we get to know each other around here.)

it's all part of what makes the world go round. :)

Well said Bart!!

Most of the "premium" stuff is made in China anyway. DA is the only exception I can think of. The combination of cheap Chinese products and a local dealer who stands behind their product is key. Case in point: I had (and still have) a PTE36 engine that literally came apart mid air. Mike at ibcinyourc took it in, rebuilt it and replaced a lot of parts with the updated versions. It's been pulling like a mule since then.

Also, it's not always true that all they do is to copy. Look at Pilot RC and Aeroplus, for example. Great airframes made by an all-Chinese company that, as far as I can tell, are original designs. I try not to support the copycats, but I have no issue buying decent-quality products at a lower price from Chinese vendors.

Pilot RC is top notch. I have flown several even when they used to be foamies if you know what I mean.

Competition can drive prices up or down. The existing, high price vendor can do things to reduce costs and compete on price. That usually means a drop in quality and or service. The existing vendor can also choose to maintain their current standards. But since at least some customers will be lost to the low cost vendors, the costs will be spread over a smaller number of customers and price has to go up. That can be a death spiral. Fortunately that hasn't happened (yet) with at least two of the top quality engine vendors or with the top quality radio makers.

Also fortunately, in most cases, when all of the top quality folks have been driven out by price competition, one or more of the low cost guys usually figures out that there is room to compete on quality/service and starts to move up the ladder.
