I can not advise you in the Hitec servo domain but I have flown this last season with brushless servos they are realy different. Hard to put my finger on it but I realy like them. It feels like less powerful brushless servo will out perform a coreless servo. They also use less mAh per flight not much but a little. I know the cost is quite high but I will try to get brushless servos for my next plane. Hope this helps.

Rob,
I fly with a fellow that loaded his Carbon cub with the 5665 and ended up sending them back for that exact reason your talking.Centering..
Believe me when I say I am a tried and true Hitec believer but in this case I would stick with the 79 series.
You have way to much time and energy into that hot rod.
Save the 5665 for an ARF..
Awesome job

Ok everyone.... I am going to probably be making some changes to the setup that I originally planned for the Pitts. I had planned to install Hitec HS7954SH's throughout the plane, (except for the throttle). But I am now thinking that is going to be far more overkill than really is necessary. I believe in using components that will be much more than I need for a variety of different reasons. But honestly, 403 oz. per surface on a plane this size is about 4 times more than I really need. So, I have been looking at options. I have been considering using the HS 5665's throughout, including the throttle as I always do on everything else. But my main concern is centering accuracy. I purchased a full compliment of HS 5685's for a friends 30% Pilot Edge not long ago. We installed them and man, the centering was so terrible they couldn't even center with "NO" load on them. Not really sure what was up with them, as I have always been very impressed with Hitec servos. Plus I like the programmability of the Hitec servos. With that being said, I am looking for input on suggestions for suitable servos for this plane. Maybe @Xpress would be willing to chime in and give us some insight huh? Due to having my programmer, and about a million 24T spline aluminum servo arms...not to mention the customer service I have always received from Hitec, I want to stay with Hitec servos. What's your thoughts???

I'm using HS-7954SH's on my 70" electric Slick, no such thing as overkill. I would use the 7954's, you're better having too much servo than not enough.

Servos like the HS-5665MH or HS-5645MG have a 3 pole motor in them which is what causes the odd centering issue, you really don't notice it on aircraft with smaller control surfaces which is what those servos are intended for, but on a 3D airplane with larger control surfaces you will notice it- even without a long 3D servo horn.

Servos like the HS-5585MH have a coreless motor which is a lot more precise with its centering, I would recommend those at minimum but you're going to get the best results using the HS-7954SH's.

We'll this is awesome information. I greatly appreciate the input. I will stay with the original planned '54's. I do like those servos a lot. Especially on an application such as this. I may pull them from the big Yak, as I want to make some revisions to that plane. They have been rock solid, however I may go with the 7990's. Or maybe even the 9380's. Thanks guys. I do appreciate it.

How about a little update on the "Community" Pitts? I have taken a break from covering for a few days to start installing some components in the fuse. Since all that is left on the covering is the trim on the upper and lower wings, I figure I can afford myself a little break from the actual "building and covering" stage to get down to the nitty gritty of the installations.

It is really nice when you go to your supply cabinet and shelves to discover you have plenty of items previously purchased to get the ball rolling. Most everything I had to purchase for the build was acquired during the build. However some of the items I needed I knew I had already.

First came the "Star" fuel dot from TDRC. I really like these guys. They are nice looking and are ultra easy to install. Course, aren't all fuel dots? LOL. I cut out a 3/32" lite ply doubler for the back of the fuel dot since the mounting location was 3/32" balsa fuse sheeting. Hardly enough to keep it in place without destroying the balsa sheet. Mounted to the inside of the fuse, the dot was installed through the fuse side and then secured with the 6 hex head screws into the glued in place doubler.

While I am at it, I might as well install the 24oz. TDRC clear fuel tank. The shape and dimensions are slightly different from the original tanks I have purchased from them. But I think I like this one better. It is narrower but taller. Fits the tank cradle in the Pitts just right.

Next a single switch on the side of the fuse that will power up the Smart Fly Power Expander Micro 12. Normally I use the Pin and Flag with the SF boards. Nothing I hate seeing more than a pretty fuse all scared up with a butt load of unnecessary switches cluttering the looks. Because Smart Fly designs their components the way they do, All electronics are powered up and shut down through the SF and the single switch.

On to the SF Micro 12 and Hitec Optima 9 rx. Nothing too elaborate there...just lay it in and start wiring. I decided to run one channel for each elevator and one channel for each rudder servo. I would have liked to had one more channel available so that I could run one channel for each aileron. Hopefully a new Hitec radio will be released soon as this would offer more options for this setup. I would like to be able to "fine" tune each aileron individually, but since I am one channel shy, I chose to "Y"....(which I hate doing) the lower ailerons to one channel and the upper ailerons to one channel. Not as many options for fine tuning, but hey...we did it this way for years right? Oh well.. I will get to the aileron wiring tomorrow. Along with the ignition and kill switch and throttle servo. I still need to figure out where I am going to put that dude.

At this rate of progress, it is feasibly possible to have this girl ready to blast off when the snow is finally done coming down and the rain drys up. Then again, with the abnormal winter weather we have had, that could be like sometime late Aug. or Sept. Just in time for the year to be over and the winter to set in again. UGH!!!! Did I mention how much I absolutely hate snow?

More tomorrow everyone.
