Pilot 40% 330 Recover and Build

Not a problem. I can give you an approximate as not all 40 centers are the same. The 40% 260 is a much smaller airframe, (Not much bigger than a 35% 330) than the 40% 330. The 40% 330 is larger than the 40 center Sukhoi. (Depending on manufacturer). The 40% Sbach is pretty close in size to the 330. The Edge somewhere in between. And of course the 40% Behemoth Yak is, well just plain big. So relative size of the full scale will ultimately dictate the size of their perspective 40% counter parts. Now as for weight, they are all fairly close to one another. But again, it would depend on setup. As well as construction techniques. 2 servos vs. 3. Straight extensions vs. Multi-plex harnesses, snakeskin or the like. All this being taken into consideration, my 40% Yak wings with 3 servos per each aileron, harnesses and wing tube are right at 11.5 pounds. My 260 were about 10 on the nose. The Hangar 9 Sukhoi with two servos per each aileron, harnesses and tube are 10.8 pounds. As for the 330? No clue yet but will get a weight once they are flight ready. In reality, anywhere between 9 to 12 pounds seems about right. Keep in mind Extreme Flight is probably lighter, and PAU Edge I know for a fact is pretty close and similar to my SD 260. Does this help or is ya confused?

Thanks for taking the time to do that for me. The reason I asked is that I am in the process of getting my big Stick back in the air and was putting the wing together and thought that it was very heavy. Weighing the wing assembly it came in at 12 lbs and 12 oz. it is on the heavy side but not outrageous. It does have a aluminum tube and is painted. I have been toying with the idea of building a 3D type of wing for it, just not sure if I am just throwing good money and a lot of work into a bad idea. Thanks for the help.

Damn I'm hungry
Nope. No ketchup, mustard, mayo or pickle doors but I do have hamburgers going on a future plane!

What do normal people do at 3:30 in the morning? Sleep right? What do abnormal people do at that time of the morning? Well, a variety of things. For example, they are probably waiting for their Behemoth Yak batteries to charge. While that is going on, you might find them working on a Behemoth 330. Lol. Such is the case of this slightly less than normal and somewhat normal life challenged plane driver.

A little progress this evening. I ran the rudder cables...
20180609_033416.jpg
Temporarily attached to rudder horns...
20180609_033357.jpg
Drilled and tapped the rudder servo arm to accept 3mm bolts...
20180609_033405.jpg
Mapped and placed the aileron Multi-plex plugs...
20180609_033425.jpg
And opened the elevator servo leads for access in the fuse. Everything is layed out and all I need to do is go back and attach everything.

Ah but for now...sleep. I need to be rested when my son and I head for the field with two planes and 8 cylinders.

More later fellas. Sleep well all.

So this 4 in the morning bedtime thing is becoming a habit it seems. I guess as long as I make progress, it's all good right? So what progress you may quandary? Well let's just say we're getting there.

Rudder cables adjusted and attached...
20180610_032029.jpg 20180610_032050.jpg
Tail wheel installed... Oh yes, that would be the "BIG" green man in the back ground that will be piloting this red headed powered beast. 20180610_032204.jpg
Fuel line run and attached to the Tillotson Carby…
20180610_032246.jpg
Since the fuel line is attached, that must mean the 157cs is once again mounted on his new home...
20180610_032340.jpg
And the throttle linkage attached...

I have more photos from the day long marathon assembly... stay tuned.

So after a short nappy-nap... I took my youngest to breakfast this morning then got right back on the 330. Wow! For all that has been done, there is still so much to complete. This is what I accomplished today.

Most everything in the forward nose of the motor box is done, so now it is time to epoxy on the motor box top.

Cutting away the bottom of the cowl to allow for the carb air snorkel. The previous owner had a DA 150 on the nose and it looks as though his choke rod was brought through the bottom. Unfortunately my 157 choke is on the opposite side so I will need to fill this small hole before painting the cowl.
20180610_151724.jpg
Test fitting the cowl and checking spinner back plate clearance...
20180610_151743.jpg
Dang...that came out really nice...
20180610_151800.jpg 20180610_151812.jpg 20180610_151818.jpg
Checking the rudder full throw. I think... it will just about be enough. LOL...
20180610_152805.jpg 20180610_152821.jpg 20180610_152832.jpg
Time to flip the fuse and open up the vent plate accesses...

She now has landing gear again...YAY!
20180610_210506.jpg
And a new set of Airman 5.25" racin' slicks...
20180610_210715.jpg 20180610_210723.jpg
Oh look...she is on here legs once more. Last time she sat on her wheels was coming up a year ago.
20180610_211048.jpg
She is starting to look like a plane...
20180610_211058.jpg 20180610_211119.jpg
A little peak inside the nearly completed fuse...

Unfortunately the 3W headers I have been saving for this project are not going to work. They don't allow ample enough clearance for the throttle linkage and choke pull rod. Sooo…. I will be talking to my "Dub" guru in Florida tomorrow. I will be ordering up a brand new set of KS Comfort Headers for the beast one fity-seven cs. About all that is left on the fuse is to attach a rudder steering arm for the tiller on the tail wheel, Install the ignition and connect to system. Install exhaust system, (when headers arrive), And lastly... install the flight packs and the ignition battery. This girl has come along way in the last week or so. She is just almost there. Over the next week I will be installing servos in the wings and stabs and programming. I don't expect that to take long however. So far, all the programming has been "Duplicated" from the SD 260 program. I simply "RENAMED" the 260 to the 330. So everything will be basically plug and play. I am hoping to have everything done so I can test run the 157 next weekend. I am going to try to start working on getting the painting done on the cowl and canopy. Once the sanding and painting is done....this monsta will be ready for a June Maiden. I can hardly wait to "mash" the gas and yank on the elevator. LOL.... Stay tuned fellas.
