As to thickness of wire and cell...I recently bought some 4S packs that came with 8AWG wire on them....I was like..."you have to be kidding me!!!"...but they are 45C batteries...

And....hopefully the soldering iron you bought has a "chisel" tip, and not a "pencil" tip. A pencil tip is fine for soldering small electronics stuff, but not for soldering batteries. The iron I use most often is the Weller SP40L, which is a 40 watt iron, and will solder even 8AWG wire. The only bad thing about this iron, is that it seems to go through tips fairly often, but they are replaceable, and are not too expensive.. Both the irons and the tips are available at any Ace Hardware, and lots of hobby shops.
You should also purchase a soldering iron "tip cleaner" these are made of synthetic sponge, and you put water into them, or are made of metal strands (Google them)...

Safety glasses are a good idea if you don't already wear glasses.

It's good to see people taking the time to learn something like soldering. You can fix all kinds of stuff yourself with a skill like that.

If I can add -

Soldering can be made easier or harder by the quality of solder you also use...

Most hobby store type irons are fixed heat pencils and unlike quality irons where you can use interchangeable different temp bits...so a good fluxed solder is vital and some LHS solders are just not any good..more ideal for welding..than soldering

One trick is to wrap the wire with the solder and then add the pencil

Another if having trouble is to find something small and metallic to make a small solder bath which you can heat solder in a thimble is good...you can then use heat gun - a cooking hob...to melt the solder and then dip the wired into it

No its a pencil tip. The hobby shop uses one for EC3 and Deans so I think I'm okay ;)

You shouldn't use a pencil tip on Deans, as it takes too long to get the heat into the tab, and will destroy the alignment of the Deans. EC3's are not too much of a problem as the wires are soldered into the "cup" while outside of the plastic. If the hobby shop owner is using them on Deans, then I would think he is soldering small wires on them, or he would be having problems.

I like big fat tips for soldering. Ideally ones that look like this one. They hold a bunch more heat and make soldering even large 10 gauge wires easy. I use a 40 watt Weller with a fat chisel tip.
