I built this...

Actually built a box around an airplane! Inside is a Flex Cessna 170 which is bound for its new owner.
I hate to admit how long I spent wrapping all the pieces to protect them from the abuse!
Let’s see if it survives the trip.

Done that before. I think the crate I built ended up being 76” long, 36” wide, and 24” tall. Boy I was nervous the whole time till the new owner said it arrived safely.

I built a wood crate to fit airline maximum dimensions LOL. Only ever used it twice... still have it. What a pain to lug to and from an airport. My wife said it looked like I was bringing a coffin with me ha ha ha!!! I even put a rod through the back half for some 3" plane tires so I could roll it... Yeah.... I was that cool guy... Good news is my wife still loves me :)

I have shipped via Forward Air several times using a plywood box I built. I save packing materials and restrain the planes, then bury them in packing material. Even a 50cc size plane can be shipped cheap via Forward Air.

However, you have to drive to Forward Air, have it weighed and measured, then go get a money order, then return and hand it off to them.

Never heard of forward air. The big one I shipped went via grey hound. I just bought a bundle of 1x2's and built the crate that way. Then the bottom got a layer of 3/4 foam from scraps I had laying around. Wrapped the whole thing in fresh cardboard from work and then just started placing parts of the plane in there one and a time and literally took the foam supports that some TV's at work shipped in and started cutting them to keep the plane in place.

Forward Air semi trucks all over the United States highways.

I build boxes out of 2x2's and 1/4" Luan plywood, cheap, cheap, cheap.

Worked on the turbo otter a bit. I 3D Printed the exhaust shroud and painted it silver. Started to cut a hole in the plane so it will double as a air exit. Need to finish trimming it and cover the bottom.

Still waiting to hear back from the decal shop.

Needs a little paint on the inside. But looks good. Little black and brown on the inside and some purple and light brown on the outside.

I like 'em "BIG"!
When AKNick takes care of bi-ness, he "REALLY" takes care of bi-ness. The new DLE 35RA arrived today in perfect condition. Included in the box was a brand new Bowman ring for said little jewel. Thanks VVRC, you guys still top shelf. I broke out the little 35 and removed the cylinder and replaced the ring. Wow is all I can say. When I bought my first DLE 55 many, many years ago...it was nice and it ran like a swiss watch. But not near as polished and pretty as the new DLE's are of these days. I love, love...LOVE my "dubs", but I have no shame in owning a DLE of today's quality. I am not about to trade of the beast motors, but hey... a little DLE now and then can't hurt anyone right? They run so dang good...

Anyway, literally five minutes after breaking the engine open to replace the ring, I was buttoning it back up and proceeding to introduce it to its new home. The Phoenix P51 Strega. Quite literally for the size and the expected weight, this plane should fly nicely on a 20cc engine. In fact the manual shows installation of the 20cc DLE engine. Oh but wait, next page shows step by step to upgrade the power plant to a 30cc. Yes, I said 30cc. Sooo why are we going up to the DLE 35RA? Ummm, because I can. LOL Besides, I am looking for some adrenaline here with this one. As if the H9 20cc Mustang isn't spooky enough. LOL.

The 35RA fits quite nicely inside the cowl of the Strega. With ample room on all sides and the cowl will allow for great airflow over the engine. I may have to open a small relief hole in the bottom of the cowl to keep the top fins on the cylinder from rubbing a hole in it...but hey, better than a huge gaping hole. The sparky sparky may require a little bit of a hole also...but not much.

Anyway, engine is mounted and ready for the setting of the cowl. I will do that tomorrow. I have the fuel tank, prop and a few other items ordered. Will have to wait until after Christmas to get the servos. I also want to order the Eflite electric retracts for this too. I am looking for an early spring maiden on this little animal. Not that I don't have any projects for this winter. So I am sure I will get back to it soon. Between the TF P40 and the Behemoth Stang…. I am going to be building my days away. Oh how I am loving this winter build season.
