IMAC Aero Tech 35% Velox Custom Build

I like 'em "BIG"!
So just a minor update on the Velox build. I did get skins for the turtle deck and forward hatch made up.

I have the skins now placed in the foam cores with weights on them until the glue cures. In the meantime, I looked over the plans and the fuse. I really don't like the stab attachment method so I will be updating the design to more current technics.

I just don't like this design.

I've also decided to use the template offered on the plans to lighten the elevators.

I will be focusing on this build for a while. I Would really like to get it done by the end of March. I guess I should inform my friend I am building this for, there is a silent requirement of me building it. "I GET TO DO THE MAIDEN"! LOL

Making wing skins is not heigh on my list it takes time and patience. What I have found out is to finish sand the skins on a glass plate it works great it ends up flat and no high spots from the glue joints. Sand the one side with 80 to a 100 flat and flip it over and sand it down to whatever you need to cover it works great a lot easier than trying to sand it on the wing just a suggestion.

That's pretty much my procedure. Back in the day I omitted this step and discovered that the finish is much better if the skins are sanded "before" they are glued onto the foam. The plane I did back then still came out pretty nice, (Lanier 1/3 scale Lazer) but it was a lot of extra work due to omitting this step.

I just checked out the turtle deck and the front hatch to see how they curing. Look pretty darn nice if I must say so myself. I am thinking I am going to make up the remaining skins for the stab/elevators and the wings/ailerons. Most everything else is ready. I have to make up a small skin for the bottom aft fuse filler too. I'm actually kind of digging building this plane. Maybe it will help prime me for that "MONSTER STANG". That one will be so fun to do. Heck, I already have the scheme selected for it. I have had that scheme decided upon since before I got the Don Smith Mustang.

How many irons do you have in the fire every were I look you are building something. Look good guy keep up the good work. Must say really interested in the mustang build when do you expect to start that mammoth build, and how are you going to power the Stang.
Obviously not enough if I am gearing up to start the "Behemoth Stang" build. LOL. Seriously though, just the Velox and the 330 right now. I plan to start the Don Smith Mustang probably right after the Velox is finished and maidened. By that time, I should have the 330 covered and nearly flight ready. (Will need a distraction now and then from building) As for power for the big Mustang? I am not 100% certain as of yet. The plane is designed for a 5.8 c.i. engine. (95 cc) If I can ensure proper and adequate cooling, I would love to have a 3w 110 inline to slap in it.

Yet, the carbs could present a challenge all their own as well. I have been able to find many documents and threads detailing baffling and carb issues. From what I am reading, stuffing a twin inside the nose of that huge Mustang should not be a problem. I would also like to find a3W-150iR2 inline twin.

They are no longer produced but someone has to have one right? I have plenty of time to decide. Biggest task will be building the plane.

I never worry about the engine before I start. Always plentyyyyy of time to solve that.

That is a nice engine saw a couple of mustangs at JoeNall and several had in line twins. You Have to stand next to the plane when they start up the sound is just out of this world and the idle is so slow and sounds fantastic. Several had two stroke in-line twin and a couple had in-line four stroke engines. The two strokes were much faster and seemed easier to live with. The only good thing that I saw about the four stroke engines was they ran a short straight pipe out the side.

Yes I agree the sound is the best you can get but at a cost the best sounding engine I have had the pleasure of listening to and seeing is the 3 cylinder in-line four stroke Kolum engine but how can afford that. And by the way it was in a mustang.
