Ok it’s time to start on inlet mods. I took a piece of paper to lie over the cowl inlet and rubbed a pencil over it to shadow the shape. Then I marked another line on the inside for the cut line. I used this as a pattern to cut the ply. Ply is just a firmer pattern to use. Used the ply pattern and traced the cut line on the inlets. The dremel tool cuts the fiberglass like butter.

My first step was to get some kind of shape for the inlets. I used masking tape and did a couple layers all around the inside. Later I’ll smear some glazing putty at the inside of intake to make the shape. The tape will come off easy when done. I wanted to stiffen up the tape so I just used some 30 minute epoxy and smeared around the tape toward the inside.
While the epoxy was drying I moved to the intake. Then I decided to use the paper cup for the mold. Using some glaze wax on the inside so the glazing putty wouldn't stick. Filled it a little and pressed it over the existing intake.
I used glazing putty and smeared it around the inside of the cowl inlet. Let that cure and then remove the masking tape. I did a little sanding and then put another thin coat of glazing putty and a little more sanding and shaping. Starting to get closer to what I'm looking for.

The new DA70 came in Friday so I am going to get it mounted and take the time to extend the inlets to make a baffle plug. Once I have the plugs done I can cut the inlets to length for the cowl plug. I would like to make the cowl and baffles all in one but looks like it would be a “B” to make the cowl in that area. This will make better sense to all when I get on it and get some pics going.

It’s been a while since last post do to fact of lots going on. I am making more progress but just behind on posting.
More done on new cowl mold and starting to look like I want. I have the inlets close to what I’m looking for but now the big debate is do I make the mold with the deep inlets. Most of the time I say no to this as it’s hard to make the cowl with the deep inlets in the mold but with this one do to the smaller size engine compared to cowl size I have plenty of positive relief. So that is a bonus. I still have time to think about this. It would really be the bomb to have these already in the fiberglass cowl though.
I cut the H/stab and got it sheeted the other day. Won’t go into much detail as the pics show it all.

Over the weekend I was able to get the wing foam cut and sheeted. I only put a couple strips of CF in. I used one strip down the wing tube and one down the length of the control surface. I won’t do any lightning cut outs on the ailerons so didn’t add a lot of carbon. I forgot to take pics but I did add the carbon strips for the cut outs on the H/stab. Tonight I’ll take the wings out of the bags and see how they look. Also plan on getting some more work done on cowl plug.

I’m thinking the new cowl plug is good enough. It needs a little sanding yet and a good coat of paint then time to start on mold frame. I posted all the pics from start to finish showing the transition.
