Just curious, why didn't you lay up the cowl as one piece with the mold halves clamped together. I understand doing fuse halves separately cause you cant get into them but this baby was wide open at the back and should have been EZPZ. It would have eliminated the step of joining the cowl halves. VTOL Aircraft World Record! DA-60 Ran Over 22 Hours Straight!

All very interesting. HFE seems to be the EFI systems mfr. using DA engines though if you go to the store there is an ECU with a big DA label on it. Several engines listed, eye popping prices. For me anyway! Doc

Yeah it takes a lot of glass sometimes to make a large mold really stiff and like you said the ply works and saves some materials(money). Sometimes that aerocell stuff can help but I'm no expert. Doc

I was wondering if you might need to stiffen the mold some as it's fairly large. Doc

Nice work! You'll have a cowl in no time now. What are you going to use to "key" the mold halves? Doc

Bummer I guess if I were to run smoke Id find a way of closing all the holes on the firewall and sealing it with resin, not tons but a lite coat and seal in the LG area. That would have to help. What percent oil do you run in your fuel? Doc

Sport JTEC RADIOWAVE 26% Pitts Model 12

The open style of structure of this type of model really would make it hard to really seal all the exposed wood, without a full firewall to block off airflow through the fuselage it would take an enormous effort and a lot of whatever you used as a sealer to accomplish that. I have often...

Damaged goods return it, the guy who had it didn't want to run it. Why should you? Doc

About the smoke oil residue damaging the airframe, I haven't seen any attempt to use resin or some outer sealer on the exposed wood parte of the model, is this not done or you just haven't gotten to it yet. Is this considered too heavy to do , or what. Doc

I don't 3D nor have an idea about the torque requirements for the rudder but I was thinking a matchbox (or similar) would surely solve the problem of too few ports, particularly on rud or elev where matched movement is what you need leaving the Rx channels for custom programming. Doc

Mild winters and Idaho sounds like an oxymoron to me, I lived in Houston Texas for near 35 years,,,now those are mild winters lol Only saw snow on the ground twice and 24 hours later there was not a trace of it, sooner than that really. Doc

I believe it, if it's really EFI and from the price if it, it seems likely. I'll have to go and read up on it, not like I could afford it but I'd just like the info. Doc

VTOL Aircraft World Record! DA-60 Ran Over 22 Hours Straight!

True EFI or FADEC as its referred to in general aviation use (Fully Automated Digital Engine Control) requires sensors ie Exhaust (O2 Sensor) barometric, manifold, intake temp, engine temp, MAP (manifold absolute pressure) throttle position, wide open throttle and maybe others. Lastly a...
