Tail Wheel Steering, Springs vs Fuel Tubing or other setups

Sounds like a good plan. I've always inserted a section of threaded rod into the ball link, then make a 90 degree bend in the rod just after it comes out of the link.  I drill a hole in the bottom of the rudder for the rod, but prior to inserting the rod, I shoot a good bit of 9462 epoxy into...

Tail Wheel Steering, Springs vs Fuel Tubing or other setups

Good points, Vern... and thanks for getting my main gear and axles shipped out so quickly!    I'm not crazy about the chains I have right now, trying to find something with smaller single links instead of the doubles on this chain... seems like the chain has to be a little bit short or a...

Tail Wheel Steering, Springs vs Fuel Tubing or other setups

Here's mine... never tried a chain and compression spring setup before, I hope it's low maintenance!

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

No problem.. like I said earlier, I'm done complaining about the motor, and I didn't really plan on a "build thread" for the plane, so this is as good a place as any.  I don't think there's a whole lot of interest in how to build a CARF MX-2 anymore... since there never was much interest in...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

They are not programmable.  I have an 18MZ, and I'll be using 2 receivers in this plane, so plenty of channels.  Also, with just one per wing, it's a simple centering and end point adjustment through the radio.  I did use Hitec everywhere except the ailerons, just because I had them left over...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

I used 1.5 inch arms everywhere except the ailerons... 2 inch there.    I also went with those new Savox 500 ounce servos in the wings, just one in each wing.  If they prove to be too weak, they're easy enough to pull out the servo mounts and add a second servo to each tray.  I've always...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

And, I was going to do crossed pull-pull lines, but doing so would make me cut a gap in the rear former... not a great idea on a CARF plane, So, I have an offset servo arm up front, but straight pull-pull wires... live and learn.

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

I had planned to do rear mounted rudder servos too, but the rudder horns just aren't big enough.  When you think about the rear mounted servo arms sticking out about a half inch from the side of the fuse, the rudder horns can only swing in to that point.  This plane doesn't have a ton of rudder...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

Thanks.  I was going to shoot a couple of coats of clear on the plane before I started building it, then I decided to just buff it down to a smooth finish then apply a few coats of wax.  It's not quite as "wet" as a good clear coat job, but it took about an hour total and no wet sanding.  Looks...

    Official 2014 HuckOWeen Pic thread!

how do you scroll through a group of pictures on this site?    OK... let me re-phrase my question.  On SOME photo uploads, there are back and forward arrows to scroll through the various pictures, and on others, there are not (the photos in this thread, for example, don't have arrows, at...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

Looks like the balance is going to work out fine.  The plane comes in at 36.25 pounds, and for starters, the CG is about 5 inches behind the LE of the wingtips, right where I wanted it to be. At that weight, even with a full tank of gas we'll be well under 40 pounds, should be fun with the...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

OK.. enough bitchin' about small things...   Bunky, if this doesn't get you to fix that MX-2 and start flying it again, nothing will.   Here's a picture of my original plane, from back in 2009, and the new one.  I would guess, given that the original plane owner got the plane for...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

Yep, that's the one.  I found his thread on the motor a while back.  Given all the crap in that thread, combined with what I've found just bolting headers and a prop on the motor, it probably needs a good once-over from Gerhard once he gets back.   I had considered drilling the exhaust out...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

That's good to hear.  I'm pretty sure the 170 that I had a few years ago had a Walbro on it, so I haven't had any experience with the Tillotson, just heard from a few others that they were a little harder to get dialed in. I agree with you though, some of those folks that are constantly tweeking...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

Will do.  The MX-2 is rated from a 100cc to a 150.  I had a DA170 in my previous one, and it was amazing fast, even with canisters and a 3-blade.  The 157 fits better into the cowl than the 170 did, except for at the carb opening.  I guess the carb sticks down further on the 3W than it did on...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

Oh, Gerhard did work on it.. about a year ago.  The guy sent me the receipt with the motor.  I know Gerhard wouldn't release a motor with those obvious problems, so there's a chapter or 2 missing out of this motor's maintenance log.  These motors are great when they're running, much more torque...

    I hate getting F'ed on a motor

So, I bought a CARF MX-2 and 3W 157 CS Twin Spark from a guy a few months ago.  The plane had never been put together, and the motor supposedly hadn't been mounted or started since it came back from Gerhard at Aircraft International for a checkup.   The airplane is absolutely as he...

    Telemetry Usefullness

I used an eagletree system years ago and it worked great.  I would see a little degradation of the signal at the ends of the field, but not enough to lose any data.  I only used it for cylinder head temps, RPM and voltage, but it worked great.  I haven't tried the new integrated telemetry yet...

Time for a new brand/stuck on two

I had a 91" EF Extra with a DA85 and a pipe.  I mounted the rudder servo in the tail (there's already a slot cut for it), and it balanced great with the batteries right over the wing tube.
