Video of Our Roots... Too Good to Not Share!

That reminds me of my first RC plane... a 2-channel glider. Stick built, lasted for 1 launch, when one wing folded over the top of the other. I fixed it and never flew it again. That was prior to 1972, and that glider is still sitting in a bedroom closet at my mother's house!

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

Great looking plane! So, it looks like your 170 fit well in the cowl. I had to cut an opening in the bottom of my cowl for the carb to stick through. It just barely touched, but the choke butterfly would not open. I had a DA170 on my previous MX-2, and it fit inside the cowl just fine. I...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

Just playing with the new website more than anything else... here's a photo and a short video clip of my finished plane. It does vibrate a little, especially when I clicked the throttle down to low idle... probably need to balance the prop/spinner.

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

I can't think of anything else to do to mine, so I guess it's done.  It will be probably 2 weeks before I can get it to the field.  I leave tomorrow morning for a few days in Mexico, then on the weekend I have plans with the wife.  The next week I'm in Charlotte for a few days, but I think I'll...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

I used some 1/32" birch plywood from the local hobby store.  It's very light, and when you coat it with West Systems epoxy, it soaks in to make a strong, fuel resistant surface.  A little bracing behind the vertical surfaces and the same under the bottom, and it should work just fine.

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

If you're torn between the DA170 and a 3W, let me confuse you a little more..... I put a DA170 in my previous MX2. It has a little less torque and horsepower than the 3W 157 CS TS, but it is a VERY smooth running motor. Here's a clip I did once I installed a Vess balance ring on the...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

One thing you have to be very careful about with radial engines in today's ARF's... the planes just aren't made for that kind of weight on the nose.  You'd wind up adding a ton of weight in the tail, then the wing loading would be so heavy, you'd end up with an expense, great sounding trainer...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

Aw, man... I wish you'd have said something earlier today.  Unfortunately, I have the baffles done now.  As you know, on a 3W, the right cylinder is forward, but on a DA, the left cylinder is forward.  If I swapped motors now, I'd have to rip out a perfectly good set of baffles, and I'm just way...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

No flying videos... I only have half a dozen or so flights on it so far, just boring circles, nothing worth filming. And yes, the MX-2 has been discontinued.  They did a fire sale on remaining inventory about a year ago, and that's where the original owner bought the plane that I'm finishing...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

The MX-2 comes with a split cowl.  I wasn't a fan of them in the beginning, but for things like building the baffles, split cowls are great.  I think most of the newer planes are coming with split cowl... I know the 330SC, and the 2.3 Edge do.     I build the Pitts that you see in my...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

It's been a cold, rainy, windy weekend, so I thought I'd go ahead and get the baffles built.  I've never been a real craftsman at this, and today's creation is no exception, but it should push air in the right direction.  I think that's the name of the game. They're all glued in place, and...

    3D Rebuilding the Compy MX2.

OK... mine's done.  I got the batteries tied down, plane is CG'd, wheel pants on, air exit holes cut in the fuse bottom.  I can't think of anything else I haven't done.  I'm starting out with the CG on the wing tube, but if I remember, about an inch back of center is a pretty good spot.

    Measuring throws on control surfaces

So... I crashed my EF 91" Extra a few months ago, and was out picking up all the pieces to bring them back to the pit area.   The plane was in splinters, so I was just stuffing things in my pockets, in what was left of the fuse, etc..  All of a sudden, one of the guys said "hey Mike, your...
