Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Made the sneak by baffles in the same manner and fit the baffles over the cylinders. Also put a 1/2" flange around the top of the baffle to stiffen and make a close fit to the top of the cowl. It's not as pretty as I would like but it will be effective, a little flat black paint will hide most...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Started working on cooling the engine, needed a baffle plate that is vertical at the engine centerline then slopes back to allow installation of the exhaust pipes. Cut a piece of 1/2" foam board to the measured angle, covered with clear package tape, and laid up two layers of 6 ounce cloth...

One final note for today, covered the landing gear struts with aluminum sheet. I think I'm finally done cutting, bending drilling aluminum.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

When the landing gear was built several sets of springs were purchased not knowing what spring rate was needed. The lowest rate was installed, 18#/inch however they are collapsed under the current weight, have 23#/inch and 32#/inch available. Hope the 23# works.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Put the Champ on the Walmart digital bathroom scale today for a weight and balance. The plane weights 34 1/2# currently needing to finish the fuselage and tail plane covering. Current calculated CG is spot on which will make the plane tail heavy once finished. Going to look and see what if...

Discovered a friend has a portable sewing machine I can borrow, picking it up this afternoon while we play cards. Did some more detailing in the cockpit area, cut a groove in the left side panel for the throttle control. Used a Dremel with a router attachment, the groove got messed up as the...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Not a very productive day, wasted most of the day watching football, of course had a few beers as well. Made the fuel tank out of a half liter Fuji water bottle, the top of the bottle sticks out of the firewall, short enough to be hidden under the dash. The brass tubes are soldered to a brass...

Scale Bud Nosen 1/4 Scale Cub?

Yes I've used 1/4" dowels, make them on the lathe. A few of the dowels end up junk as the small drill will follow the grain. Glue in with thin CA. I make them 1/2" long an cut off with flush cut saw after gluing.

Thanks Nick, found a video using idyepoly on PETG, ordered 4 packs from JoAnn Fabrics, should be here soon. I like to have all the interior completed before I cover the fuselage, not sure what will get painted first, the outside or the inside, thinking I will paint the interior and mask it off...

Scale Bud Nosen 1/4 Scale Cub?

Bud Nosen was way out in front of the giant scale scene, was hard to find power for his birds back in the day, not like the selection we have today. Use what you can and make new where needed and post a lot of photos.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Thank you dhal. Found this photo on Ebay sometime ago. Figured it would be great reference since a wood measuring stick was included in the photo. There were seven or eight photos that were saved. Ordered 36" long KS 1/4" tube to make the frame. The first try yielded a usable frame with...

Cut out the aluminum dash today. The gauges were located based on the three view drawing. At the joint were the boot cowl meets the dash, a 1/8" lip was left on the the boot cowl, this was rolled over the dash aluminum with a wall paper roller to finish the joint. I ordered a gauge set from I...

The front tubes were laid out on the bench. For the top 'W" shape glass cloth was rolled into a Tootsie Roll and slide into the tubes, thin CA was applied to the joint. Starting from the middle, each joint was completed and the assembly was removed and additional CA squirted into the tube to...

Thank you Nick. I put the windshield in a mixture of water, vinegar, and two bottles of Rite synthetic green dye. The only container big enough was the base of a small shop vacuum. Theres about three gallon of water, two and half cups of vinegar. There is a small heater under the base...
