Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

I am in talks with the guy who did the laser cutting, but at this point I think I am going to have to do all of the fuselage over again. If you were wondering how I feel about that, I am not very happy. I will see if I can salvage some of it. I know for sure that some of it will have to be done...

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

After doing a bunch of studying the plans and trying to match pieces up, I have concluded that the former's will not work. They simply are not cut correctly. I checked the stabilizer ribs and found that they are not cut correctly and several are missing. The wing ribs appear to be usable...

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

I decided to cut the remaining formers into halves and build 1/2 first on the board, then build the other side onto it. I will then attach that to the remainder of the fuselage. At this point, I plan to make it all one piece without the need to put them together at the field. This is going to...

I think those would actually fit, although I have yet to personally meet an RCGF engine that runs well. Any chance you feel like testing one out for me? ;)

Looking around, it appears the best options for twins are the VVRC 40's, RCGF 40's, and DLE 40's. Another option would be EME 35's with autostarts, assuming they would fit. I don't know what the power difference would be.

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Spent some time today placing stringers, measuring, placing, measuring, gluing, etc. The issues with the notches not lining up correctly have been covered well in another build thread, and I can confirm there are several places where things don't line up quite right. The main problem is with...

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

I highly doubt the 60's will fit. I think I'm going to be stuck with just enough power with the twin 40's or cut up the cowls and have an ugly cylinder hanging out the bottom with a pair of 60's. The twin 60's I'm sure would be too wide. You're right though. Folks used to fly things like this...

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

That's the million dollar question. Since it is scaled up, I'm guessing about 40 lbs. It's just a guess though.

Okay, I know we're starting off a little slow. I just took possession of a new airplane trailer, so I will be working to get it all set up for hauling and storing our big planes. I'm hoping to get it mostly done tomorrow so that the build can resume.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm totally bummed, but I plan to build another someday.

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Absolutely. My concern is that they won't be enough power. I'm leaning toward two 55's. They'd make it necessary to cut up the cowls quite a bit though.

Exactly. I'm going to trim where I can. I did end up trimming it up substantially.

Lots of measuring and notching stringers to make them fit. Notice the formers are light ply instead of balsa. Deciding on whether I'll trim the fat of FF18 in the back there. It's not glued in yet for that reason.

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Yeah, I had thought about the 35's with autostarts as well. Not sure how well the starters would fit. An easy-to-start 40 twin might be the ticket. Not sure on the retracts just yet. With Century Jet closing down my only options are Sierra and Robart. I'll have to see what they have available...

Progress for tonight. Measuring lots, gluing a little.

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

First blood! I always cut myself a couple times. Glad I got it out of the way... Lots of measuring while placing the formers. Once it's started, it's tough to stop though.

First image shows the width of the firewall. It really is not much.

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Glad I have some viewers!! One of the problems with sizing up plans is having to figure out the new sizes for things like stringers, spars, etc. It is looking like the stringers for the fuselage will be 1/8" square. Of course, it's one of the few sizes that I don't have much of. Looks like...

Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Winter is coming.... So, it's time to start building something. My last project had a structural failure in flight, so I'm going to be paying a lot of attention to structural integrity while still worrying about weight. I ordered a scaled up short kit from Sunset Models for the Palmer Shrike...

    Hostetler Cessna 336 Skymaster

Sorry for the delay. Thank you very much. I am going to move on and already have pieces to start building a new airplane. I learned a lot from the build and have every intention of building another one someday. I know what failed and why, and that is a lesson that we can all learn from, so...
