And now for the progress I've been making over the last week: the right wing panel. All I have left to do is SAND SAND SAND, and then SAND a wing tip to shape. Please don't judge me by the rough product in the final picture, or by how messy the work bench has become. I'm going to clean it up...

    Tavis Newman

My favorite memory was from Huckfest two years ago when he won a raffle prize, only he didn't use his actual name. So, an 8 year old kid reading the name over the loudspeaker read the name off the ticket: "Chick Banger". It was hilarious.

Gluing the outer wing panel spars to the wing "plugs". I ended up sanding them a little too much on one side and they move a little in the spar box. I'll have to figure out a way to get them to slide in easily and still not move too much inside the center section box.

So, got out the plans for the outer wing panels and laid out the ribs. Four sticks of basswood are needed as well. When I laid everything out and looked at the plans where the hardwood wing joiners/plugs go, I noticed that there was a box in the outer wing panels on the plans to receive the...

Both rudders now finished, although I may need to tweak their dimensions slightly later on. TBD. It's progress at least. Now that I'm building things again instead of trying to perfect the stab, I'm accomplishing a lot more. Next: the wing!!

So, two weeks later... I finished both of the hatches and just did not like the way they were not forming up to the curve of the stab. I put balsa on them, sanded, put filler on them, sanded, and I still don't like them. I found myself not wanting to work on this project at various times...

I'm hoping to transport the fuse and wing center section/tail booms/etc. in one piece with just the wing "halves" to install at the field. It should fit in the little trailer.

Oliver is struggling with a broken airplane, (the old Aerobeez Slick) at the moment. He's also not too fond of that RW Extra that we have. I'm not giving up on it yet, but in the meantime he doesn't have anything that he truly loves flying.

I made a cut-out in the bottom of the stab and used a piece of 1/8" ply for the hatch cover. Using advice from above, I'm going to cover with with a layer of balsa and sand to match the airfoil of the surface. Progress has been slow due to other things interfering...

So, I've been mulling about how to handle the tail booms and the linkages for awhile now. I've decided it's time to put the issue to bed so that I can stop fretting about it. It has been stalling progress. I'm going to go ahead and mount four mini servos in the stab with a hatch on the...

Right now, I'm feeling VERY DISCOURAGED by the linkage options for the elevator and rudders. There is just not much room to work with for concealing the rods once they get to the fins. I'm going to look around online and see what the full scale linkages look like, but I'm about to the point of...

Before I go much further on the tail booms and wing center section, I need to set the wires for the tail beacon and the pushrods for the rudders and elevator, along with mounting the servos. I was going to use the Hobby King high power LED system I have on hand, but the LED's are all attached...

    Hostetler Cessna 336 Skymaster

With the wing center section's frame mostly complete, I found myself staring at it wondering what I should do next. I need to decide on servo placement before I do too much more on it. Then, I was suddenly inspired to start on the horizontal stab. Making the stab and attaching it to the...

I'm back and I'm making progress now. I didn't work on it for a few months because I just didn't feel like it. Now, I'm excited about it again. We'll see if I can get it done by the end of the summer, eh?

For the two or three of you that may still be following this thread, you may recall that I already built up the tail booms and vertical stabs previously. Now that I have the spar boxes complete and the front half of the wing center section built up, I can attach the booms to the rear spar box...

Once you lay out the plans and get started, you'll wonder why you don't build all year long... Trust me, it's weird. As soon as you just get the plans out and start, it takes off...

    Hostetler Cessna 336 Skymaster

After too long of a hiatus, I finally, FINALLY got the plans out and started on the wing center section. I started gathering all the wood that I would need, and lo and behold.... I was missing several sticks. I was able to get started because I had anticipated needing more 1/4X3/8 basswood...

    Hostetler Cessna 336 Skymaster

Looking at Hostetler's other planes, I'm seeing that there is a wire support that runs up the sides, between windshield and side windows, that acts as a brace for the front wing mounting block. I had wondered when looking at the Skymaster how that little bit of wood was supposed to support the...

Thanks guys. I am still working on the garden shed that has been consuming all my building time. The poor weather conditions and busy holiday season have not helped.

You and maybe two other people in the world! My Skymaster project is on hold while I build a shed in the backyard. As soon as it is done, the Skymaster will get my attention again. The good news is that it will free up a lot of room in the garage for airplane-related items.
