On my second flight of the day my 74" Edge was not responding well so I landed. The left aileron servo arm had popped off. So now I know the plane can be flown and landed with only one aileron! This is my flying buddy's 40 year old Giant Stik with a DLE 85 on the nose. It's not a...

    3DHS and Extreme Flight Merger?

I don't see the downside for the full scale manufacturers. It's not as though someone was going to buy a $300,000 full scale plane and saw an add for a $70 model and decided to buy it instead. :D Marc

I would have taken 7-12 mph today. We had 20 mph and it was exactly 90 degrees to the runway. And it was cold too. Marc

This is what I did. I made it out of a few bucks worth of PVC pipe and fittings. Though I usually keep it on a stand on the floor now because I fly it a lot. Marc

    3DHS and Extreme Flight Merger?

For me, Tower Hobbies is the gold standard of customer service in the hobby. Anytime I call, a nice lady answers and she always says she is sorry the part was missing or broken and that she will send out a replacement part immediately. I realize that Tower Hobbies is probably 10 times (or 100...

Tim Pastor from RedwingRC shows us how to repair any plane in 3 easy steps!

With the exception of the bat, that's how I've been doing repairs for a long time. :D Marc

Dennis, Once I got the mixture set on my 30cc DLE I haven't touched the needles. But the only other field at which I've flown my gasser is about 5500' elevation. I have flown some of my foamies at near sea level and definitely felt more power. Marc

We're at 7400' elevation and there is a ski hill in town. So snow itself isn't unusual. But this late in the season is! Marc

We were supposed to have our annual spring maintenance day at the flying field today. But this snow storm postponed it. We sure need the moisture so I won't complain. Marc

SupaTim builds a 73" AJ Laser!!

Tim, Thanks for your effort on documenting this build. Even though I'm not building this airframe, many of the techniques (grinding a flat for set screws, using a soldering iron to remove covering) are universal and can be applied to almost any build. I look forward to the maiden. Marc

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

I'm an electrical controls engineer. But I've worked in manufacturing facilities my entire career. The metrics used to measure quality are always a target of X with an allowed variance of plus Y and minus Z. The smaller you make Y an Z, the more product you end up with that has to be reworked or...

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

Perhaps the bell curve distribution for a DA engine is more narrow than a DLE? Still, most (nearly all) of the DLE's will run fine. But for the guy like me who got a troublesome engine, it can be a frustrating experience. Marc

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

I'm guessing thousands of people are running these engines without any modifications and without any problems. But if the manufacturing tolerances are not really tight (as one might expect at the price point these engines sell at) there will be a few engines on either side of the bell curve that...

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

My answer is not going to be very satisfying to you, but I just put on a stock replacement carb. I never did find out what was wrong with the original carb. After trying to follow a lot of advice on "correct tuning" that still resulted in dead sticks, I decided I would spend $35 for a new...

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

I agree. But for what it's worth, I've put 7 gallons through my DLE 30 since I replaced the carb and it hasn't died once. I have confidence to fly it low and inverted now. Marc

Pete's Tip of the Week: Using Zip Ties on Fuel Lines

Great tip Pete. Another thing worth mentioning is that fuel lines get very slippery once they get wet with gasoline (I learned this the hard way). So it may be a good idea to either solder on a fuel line barb or just solder on a blob of solder like I did. That will give the zip tie something...
