    65" Vyper Discussion Thread

If you think you'll use much of it, it's cheaper to buy a box of Blenderm on eBay. I use a lot of it to hinge foamies and even small balsa planes. Marc

    74" Edge 540

Shortly before I sheared the rudder off my plane on a failed harrier landing, a skilled photographer named Sean at a neighboring club got these shots of my Edge. Marc

Yeah, it's already fixed. Too bad the scar is so small. Just a little bit of missing covering at the back bottom edge of the rudder. I ground back the old busted hinges and drilled new holes next to the old ones. I think I can do that 5 or 6 more times before I run out of virgin wood. :D Marc

There is a fine line between a successful harrier landing and shearing off your rudder. Marc

I was flying foam at the local park with a buddy. We hang out in the shade of a tree and land at our feet. A very relaxing form of flying. :) Marc

    Mini How-To How I built a 200W LiPo Discharger

Thanks for posting that Yowzilla. I actually didn't even know there were chargers available that allowed the use of an external dummy load. My most common reason to discharge a battery is a crashed plane instead of the wind though. I've been using this 50 watt car headlight to...

    Aeroplus 60cc / 92" Edge 540 V3 from Limitless Aero

Very impressive looking kit Gary. But I'm almost as impressed that you've built 40 ARFs in the past 2 years. I'm only 39 behind you. :o Marc

Thanks guys. I'll see if the stretching stabilizes over the next few weeks. The other guys in my club don't seem to have this problem but I think I wiggle my rudder more than they do. :o Marc

After every 10 to 20 flights, I find my pull-pull rudder cable has stretched and I need to tighten the turnbuckles half a turn or so. Do you guys find this needs to be done for the life of the airframe? Or will they stretch to a certain point and then stretch no more? Or should I maybe use a...

Very cool knife-edge elevator harrier landing (or whatever you would call that landing!) Marc

    74" Edge 540

I just finished off the second gallon of gas through my DLE-30. Maybe it was the cool thick air yesterday, but the DLE sure seems to be getting stronger. Most notable pulling out of a hover. I'm still running an 18x8 "break-in" prop but with my flying style I don't really feel the need to prop...

Excellent communication from 3DHS A few days ago I ordered some spare parts from 3DHS for my 74" Edge (everyone needs a spare cowl and wheel pants, no?). I checked the USPS tracking number today and it said the package was delivered to Quarryville, PA (home of 3DHS). But I live in New Mexico...

The way I look at it is that everyone gets something different out of this hobby. If flying in the wind isn't fun for a guy, I don't feel the need to convince him otherwise. Probably a third of my club is over 65. Some of them hardly ever fly actually. But they're interesting guys that have led...

Our field was empty today because of an 8-10 mph crosswind that many guys in our club find uncomfortable to fly in. So I had the whole place to myself to practice low level knife-edge passes with my 74" Edge right down the runway. :D Marc

    74" Edge 540

Congratulations on your maiden Chopper. I too am enjoying this airframe (now that my DLE-30 issue is resolved). For myself, I wonder if a big part of my enjoyment comes from the "bigger flies better" adage, having stepped up to this airframe from a 41" Edge. I had spent parts of every flight...

    74" Edge 540

It looks like a nice clean build. Congrats. This airframe was my first gasser. I was worried about how the CG would change as I burned up fuel. But I can't say I even notice it yet. I only have about 25 flights on my plane so far, but I fly quite a bit inverted and I don't really feel much...

    78'' Extra

"Had to" was a poor choice of words on my part. I should have simply said "that's what we did and it worked and we stopped there". The gentleman I was helping is well into his 70s and and isn't very comfortable programming anything. As a relative club youngster at 50 years old, I'm sometimes...

    78'' Extra

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this personally. But I found this online for the 9503, which sounds pretty similar to the way I did it last weekend when I helped a buddy program dual elevator servos into his Futaba 8FG. "The device select menu that allows you to INH the aux channel used for...

    DLE-30 Dies When Inverted

I wanted to close the loop on this and post some photos of the original carburetor dis-assembly I did today with one of our more experienced club members. It wasn't nearly as intimidating as I had feared. But the bottom line is that we found no smoking gun as the cause for the engine dying when...

Some supply guidance on starting into balsa plane(s)

Rich, It's just a personal preference, but I like to use wood glue (like Titebond) for balsa airframe repairs. It's probably heavier than CA, certainly takes longer to cure, and you have to tape the joint or clamp it. But it sands pretty easy, doesn't stick to my fingers, and the fumes don't...
