Tuned pipe on a DA50. How many dB?

Unfortunately, I have to deal with new noise restrictions at one of my fields. Anything flown on a Sunday needs to meet <90dB @ 10ft. I haven't tested it yet, but I have a feeling my DA50 with a single pipe side dump is going to fail that with quite a margin. So I need to do something about my...

3DHobbyShop 71" Slick motor box rebuild

My popsicle-stick based repair only lasted so long. The weekend before the NJ FLI, I pulled out the firewall in a KE-spin and pancaked hard. Obviously, the motor box was now junk, but I also pulled out the landing gear. So I went and ordered a motor box repair kit from 3DHS. For about $30, you...

    Deans plugs current limit

What's the highest current you guys use Deans plugs for? I have a system that puts out a little over 80A on Deans. Should I be worried?

    3DHobbyShop 75" Extra

The new 30cc Extra made its debut at the NJ FLI yesterday. It looks and flies amazing! I think Joe flew it on 12s and it had INSANE energy. I'll post some spy pictures later today.

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

It looks like the FAA finally posted those model aviation guidelines they've been talking about. Nothing too surprising there. In summary: "Follow AMA guidelines! Don't be a douche! Have fun!" http://www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/uas/model_aircraft_operators/?cid=TW224

    DA50 dying in blenders

The DA50 in my 88" Aerobeez Slick dies when I do blenders. Luckily, I've had enough rotation/windmilling for it to start again. But I almost had to change my underwear... Is this a known issue? How do I troubleshoot? I'm using the stock tank that came with the plane and a standard clunk setup.

    DA-50 Side dump exhaust question

I'm trying to fit a side dump exhaust in my Aerobeez 88" Slick, but it would require me to pretty much slaughter the cowl. However, if I could cut the pipe just an 1/2 inch or so, it would fit perfectly. Would I affect performance if I cut the pipe on the side dump? Are they tuned in any way?

    TwistedHobbys Crack Turbo Beaver

Introduction Playful 3D interpretations of classic high-wing models seems to be all the rage this year and the Crack Turbo Beaver is TwistedHobbys' take on the theme. You realize that you're looking at a mix of old and new when you see the classic Cub-style airframe combined with high-tech fins...

    Funnel hovers

I'm struggling with funnel hovers. They look really easy, but I'm having problems finding the sweet spot where the plane sits at the same altitude or slowly ascends. What usually happens is that I over compensate with the ailerons (I think) after a few turns and the plane flips over inverted and...

    Lesson learned: Bullet connectors

I had a bullet connector where the male and female fit together a little loosely. Since I always put an extra piece of shrink tube over the connection and there's no chance they'll pull apart, I didn't think much of it. Well, yesterday my 51" Slick had a dead stick (with a perfect landing...

    Aerobeez 48" EPP/Balsa hybrid Sbach 342

Introduction We all love our profile foamies for their light weight and crash forgiveness. But they are limited to indoor venues or calm days (which we don't seem to get many of). Here's where the hybrid EPP planes come into the picture. They are reasonably crash resistant and the good ones can...

    Motrolfly 3615

I have a Xoar 15x7 sitting around (not in a flower pot this time). Would that be overdoing it with a 750kv wind on 4s? The plane is an 51" AJ Slick.

    Cool Moments with Wifey

I thought I would have my wife shoot some cool video of me flying in the backyard. The flight turned out really squirrely because I had set the wrong flight mode with zero expo on all control and Penny filmed it in vertical video mode. But at least there's one memorable moment in it. Enjoy! :)...

    More predictable pop tops

I love to do pop tops. Especially with my 58" Edge that spins like a top when you get it right. The problem is I don't always get it right. About 50% of the time, I get nice pop tops. 25% of the time I get something that looks like a crankshaft (spinning around the wing tube) and the remaining...

How to repair SFG blind nuts

We've all done it. A screw is a little dirty or has some slight deformation and we try to force it in and... POP... the blind nut on the other side comes loose. This can be a pain, since they are typically located in areas you can't reach. And this is especially true for the blind nuts holding...
