I am absolutely failing tonight. Having a heck of a time trying to cover my wingtip. Tried about five times and although getting better, it’s not good enough. This rounded fiberglass tip and deep blue ultracote sticks very well and doesnt want to erase the wrinkles. Any tips? I’ve been sealing the strait seam and working around with an iron then with a heat gun. Kicked my butt tonight.

Been in your shoes before. Gave up and painted the wingtips instead.

When I did Monokote over glass many years ago I stated in the middle and used stretch rather than shrink, iron heat turned all the way up, two people may help tugging on the covering. It works with Monokote I know, at the time was told that Ultrakote did not work as well. Ironically Ultrakote was the covering of choice back then and have since switched to Monolote, when it's gone I'll switch to Hobby King film, it works very well and cheap, color selection is not that good.
I would try starting on the middle of the top and work your way out then trim the straight line. From what I can remember I don't think that Ultrakote stretches very much but it been a long time.

Very much considering this. Not sure how enamel will hold up ontop of ultracote.

Thanks, This might be a new strategy. One issue is the white gel coat primer that came on the wingtips wants to bond to the adhesive as soon as the covering gets tacky... makes it super hard to work around the wingtip. I think concentrated heat like you speak of may make it work. I have a variable fan heat gun to try out as well. May have just been throwing too much air with the top flite heat gun.

Ironed about the size of dime in a circular motion, Must be a night owl, what time is it and Alaska?
I last tired to cover a wingtip at 10pm, I left for work at 4am.... I think I got 3 hours of sleep last night. . . Kept having a dream my little girl was up and trying to get into things - Had to remind myself that shes asleep in her crib. LOL

I have always worked with monokote, I find it much better. I did cover a friends plane with Ultrakote and had a very hard time with getting it around corners. Same as Nick.

Well I got close, but still had wrinkles. When removing the covering, the material separated - creating a huge mess. So I called it a night and will pick at and scrub the covering off. Very much considering painting now.
Anybody have experience with enamel paint over ultracote? I have a small 1/8-1/4" overlap of ultracote I would have to paint over. curious about adhesion.

I would think if you taped it off and sanded lightly that it would be okay. Enamel stick pretty well to most anything. If it doesn't work maybe you could go over it with a trim stripe? When I painted the wingtips I did it before they were on the wing. So I don't have first hand experience painting over covering.

This is what I was thinking as well. Luckily the Deep Blue 2x Enamel is an almost perfect match to the deep blue ultracote.
