Well had my motor do a loud chirp today when punching out of a maneuver at low altitude. No throttle, prop windmilled. Barely made it back, had to skid turn to slow it down and pooped it on next to the runway. Looks like a connector got very hot, there is splattered solder on the inside of the cowl it looks like. Not sure if it shorted out on the engine mount or what... ESC no response, just shakes the prop and I get a yellow flash followed by three red ones.
When I plopped the plane down it bounced off the main gear, hit the tailwheel and broke it off and settled back on the mains. Main gear is in good condition.
The good news is I have a DA35 ready to go in this plane :)

Looks like the motor connector plugging into the ESC vaporized.

But why? The other connectors don’t show any signs of arcing. And the bullet connector was left inside the ESC receptacle. Sounds like a bad solder joint, internal resistance at 50v could get hot and vaporize that sucker.

As an electric setup, My CG was about 1/2" behind the wing tube, had to add 3 oz of sticky weights in the tail and two 6S 3300-3700 lipos up front butted up against the wingtube, which gave me 4min of 3D flying.

Out with the “old” in with the new! I’ve had this DA35 sitting here for a while now, time to mount it and fly this plane again!
For the record I re soldered the vaporized bullet connector and ran it up with no issues. But I’m
Done with the long charge times and 4min flights. I’ve seen this plane on YouTube with the DA35 and it’s a performer. I debated the GP38, but I’m going with shaving the weight and keeping it light up front.

Oh the cowling... got the basics done. Inlet air path to the engine. Spark plug hole, and exhaust. In order to fit the Jtec Pitts wrap around muffler I had to hack off 3/8-1/2” and the exhaust still sticks out 1” from the cowl.

Now I’ll have to open up exit air dump in the cowl along with the ignition wire location and cut out. I was doing some primitive CG test for how it’s looking. Seems like I need to keep stuff aft to where I liked it before.

Well Nick sorry to see what happened to just hope that my adventure in electronics with my Timber is a little more successful. But as you know it is all setup from the start to be switched over to a DA50 in flash.
Is the motor and or the ESC still ok .

I ran up the motor/ESC after soldering a new bullet connector on and it ran great. Just tired of the flight times.
