had to change the alternator to a physically smaller one to fit under the cowling

I guess my first thought is....why? You have plenty of forced air cooled coming in the front of the cowling. With proper baffling the rear cylinders can get adequate cooling. Has worked on full scale flat 4, 6 and eight cyl engines for a loooong time. I also subscribe to the KISS principle, as well as "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I agree, but here is my reason, not sure I can do a proper baffling and don't want to take a chance , although I will try out the baffling first
