78'' Extra

It is already in the trash can. The entire fuse is shattered. Non repairable. It would need a new fuse, canopy, and cowl, and at that point you might as well get a new kit. I really like this airframe. Probably another one will be in my future. The electronics are slated for a 78 with the twin from my Yak. Doing some fleet shuffling at the moment with gear.

I put 1 gallon through my Extra today. Man, i REALLY missed this plane. The 40cc twin is a fantastic match for the airframe. I tried a Vess 21A and 20B today and i prefer the 20B for my open sky style of flying. The 21A had really good pull down low and made hovering SUPER easy but i like the speed the 20B gave me. It still hovered great but not as easy as the 21A. For the cost of the engine the performance is awesome, to beat it you would have to pipe a single cylinder or put a 50cc engine on this plane. I may go back to the OS with tuned pipe for sound reasons but i'm very happy with the twin.

There was a pretty good crosswind today so i took the SFGs off after the 2nd flight. They're so big i really only like using them on really calm days. So far the CF gear i put on is holding up but i noticed that i broke my tailwheel bracket. I'll have to replace it. I'm definitely glad i put wheel pants on it again because it they really are a must on a plane this big. I'll get a pilot figure in a few weeks. That's the only thing my Extra is missing :)

I'll try and get a video this weekend if the weather is good.

Matt doesn't know it yet but I'm sure after the other day he won't be surprised hearing this. When you get that 78 up we need to get an act together! I think it would be very cool. Once I'm all broken in and piped! What do you say? I'm using peer pressure of the forum!!! Don't know about you but that 5 minutes we had was the most fun I've had with this plane so far. Video is almost cooked, stby.

Another gallon burned today. I got to the field around 11 and there was no one there so I proceeded to fly tank after tank. I lost track of how many flights I did but I'm thinking it probably took 10-12 flights(about 2 hours in the air)to go through that.
Since I was able to put a gallon through the engine on Thursday without any issues at all I was feeling confident enough to bring it down loooow. I really love how light this plane feels when doing 3D, it just floats through moves so nicely. The power with the twin isn't ballistic but it's perfect for smooth 3D. With the vess 20b I have nice speed for high energy stuff but the 21x8 performed a little better in post stall of course. For my style I settled on the vess 20b.
After I got tired of fooling around down low I had some fun beating on the plane :) Blenders, crankshafts, ke spins, ke walls, etc. This plane can take A LOT of abuse  Flying the 48 Extra for a few months definitely improved my skills with this plane. Today is the first day I feel like I was flying my 78 like how I fly the small ones. I had a great time today :D

excellent!

+1!
Just home after first day of IMAC. In second place by only 55 pts on a 1000 pt scale! Should get at least 2 more rounds in tomorrow! Having a great time. Still prefer freestyle, 3D and formation Acro but this is another skill to be mastered for sure. Lots of respect for the pilots who do it well.

Thanks. Only loss was one wheel pant. Made a successful one wheel landing and taxi off to grass due to loose wheel. No extra points however! Having fun. Good group of people in our region with IMAC.

The only way to get ballistic power in this size is probably electric. I think the 40 twin is as good as I have had in this size in a gas powerplant. The piped motors will have more power, but they will have to spool up to get it.
