I like 'em "BIG"!
A little more work on the big Mustang. The last couple of days between holidays and work has slowed me a bit. But still making progress. I have been mulling over in my head ways to secure the outer wing panels to the center section for flight. There are actually a couple of methods I've seen implemented. But nothing I really felt warm and fuzzy over. Then I remembered I saved some parts from a friend's crashed photo ops plane. Aluminum channel and bars that were used to secure his outer wing panels. I figured I could devise something that would work. After cleaning the parts and shortening the bars, I epoxied the channel sections between the main spars where the center and outer panels would join. Then laying a ply plate against the channel and a reinforcement shear web against that, everything was epoxied into position. 4mm holes then drilled through the main spars and bolts threaded into the aluminum channels now sandwiched between the spars. The bolts will tighten down on the aluminum bar that slides into the channel sections of each center wing end and the corresponding wing panel. Since now real side load will be pulling on the outer wing panels, the slip on sections will insure plenty of support to keep everything tied together. I really like this.
I also got one half of the aft wing bolt block supports cut and epoxied in place. The area consists of boxing the area with lite ply, then a balsa block inserted inside and finished off with a lite ply plate.
Its no wonder this plane is a beast. The construction is quite time consuming.
Tomorrow I will finish the aft wing bolt block for the opposite wing half. I'm pretty close to sheeting the bottom of the wing. Course, I'm waiting on sheeting to arrive from Balsa USA. So I may not finish the sheeting for a few days. I still have to decide on my trim tab construction. Still not sure what I want to do yet.
Yet, no doubt I'll be working on the DS Stang this weekend. So more progress will be made.
More later everyone.
