The question remains: What happened to the trainer?

Cool! How much of the covering did you replace?

The trainer turned into a 1000 chopped bits of foam. It was actually kinda sad. The FOG, and yes, he was 100% a FOG, went out, and meticulously picked up each of the Tower Pro 9g servos, and the tons of foam pieces from the desert brush, and carried them back to the pits.
It was one of the those times where you were bummed that you had an accident with your plane, but also smirking because it couldn't have happened with a better guy.

As for the covering, I re-covered from just in the back of the canopy forward.

I've seen a 100" wing span P47 Thunderbolt slice through a Great Planes Extra 55". Unfortunately, it happened to a nice guy this time. The Extra looked like it had been through a meat slicer from the canopy and back. The P47 landed with a small chip on the prop.

Moral of the story: Size DOES matter... :)

(Sorry for veering off topic. Back to the scheduled programming)

About 1/3 done with the repairs. The cockpit area was seriously compressed by the cartwheels and the sheeting and two of the formers were cracked and shattered. I don't have all the pieces for one of the formers, but I will patch it up with ply and maybe some CF. And I need to replace some covering. Anyone living close to me who has a patch of UltraCore Pure Red? :)

I need to finish this fast, or it won't get done in a while. The UPS man will most likely bring something interesting tomorrow...

Almost fixed!

I ended up just patching up whatever I could find the pieces for. Wherever there were pieces missing and/or there were too many cracks, I stiffened using a thin CF strip. I know a real builder would have manufactured new formers and cross braces from plywood, but I'm a cheater and a lousy builder, so I went for patching and CF. Probably added a few grams AUW, but I can't imagine it's going to make much of a difference.

Just stick on a patch of covering and she should be airborne soon!

heard on talk radio today, they came out with a survey top ten best places to be born in 2012. Sweden was in the top 5, when i heard that i was wondering about people in sweden and the nordic countries flying planes. it being cold alot. how they have adapted their planes for really cold weather flying.
