I know some guys like Matt have not had good luck with Greyhound, but I sent three planes in the same BIG box along with other goodies to a friend in TN for $63 which included $300 in insurance, but you have to go to the terminal to drop off and pick up. The tracking was strange, and it may not have left the local depot for 48 hours, but it did get there in the same condition I sent it. If the box width and height are big enough, they can't stack anything else on top of it.
I've built and assembled a lot of plane for my son and I, and he's always handed a Tx and asked to fly OPP at our 180 member club, and at fly-ins around the southeast, so he's now flown over 220 different planes now. So far, the list of planes he would fly consistently are from a very short list. Buying a plane for less, and being disappointed to the point where it sits idle, is not worth any price, IMO.
My 74 Edge with a 69 inch fuse from 3DHS cost $485.20 delivered. My 78 Extra with a 76 inch fuse, cost $576.48 delivered. My guess is that the 83 MXS will cost $606, so it's starting to get up there. But these are still fair prices considering the fun we have with them, which is something I can't say about the last 73 inch bargain plane I bought where the shipping was only $49.
Would I buy more planes from 3DHS and EF during the course of the year if the shipping was less expensive? You bet. But what I save by not buying planes that disappoint me makes paying a little extra for planes from these companies a real bargain, IMO.
I'm under the impression that PAU just moved to Orlando, so I may have to take a trip over and see what the prices are, and if they do a local pickup, but the trip over is about $45, plus my time, which I like to consider as 'not cheap'. Crashing a plane at a Huckfest or Fly-In in Deland or Apopka would give me some space to fill on the way back, so that's always an option.
