we were asked (and asked, and asked, and asked) to open a donations button but we didn't want to just accept unsolicited donations so we configured the support tiers for people that want to make a direct contribution to the operation of the site. As Sleepy and I were discussing it we also didn't want to have the money be a general fund that some might mistake for money we'd use to buy planes and stuff so we've earmarked it for expenses related to attending events. Just hotels and gas alone can be very expensive so we thought it would be an acceptable thing to dedicate the money to.
