PAU Ultimate assembly

Not saying anything more until it is in hand.
As for comparing the Ultimate and Pitts, depends on which version. This PAU Ultimate has a thinner airfoil and smoother lines than a standard Pitts so it flies a little faster. The control surface's are also bigger than a standard Pitts so it is more aggressive at maneuvers. Now compared to the Challenger with it's larger control surfaces and thinner airfoil it is somewhat similar. Another difference and probably the most notable is the distance from the bottom wing to the top wing of the Ultimate. That larger separation give's the Ultimate a more stable envelope, less turbulence between the wings. I have viewed this difference before with onboard video where the canopy is centered. The Pitts canopy rattles like crazy whereas the Ultimate does not. Then add in that the Ultimate has a longer fuse which makes for better line's.
So, I would have to say that all in all the Ultimate in general is the better flier, it is cleaner, smoother, and more aggressive. But the Pitts is by far the better looking one.
You really have me intrigued. Have had a couple of Ultimate planes but they were all 120 glow size. Never flown a Pitts but as you have the best looking. Presently flying a Skybolt love the plane and enjoy the plane my feeling is that the Skybolt is very similar to the Ultimate. @acerc have you flown a Skybolt do you have the same opinion.

Yes I have and felt it flew more like a Pitts but that is because of the very similar wings and tail feathers, even the fuse is more like a Pitts. Of course all of this is relative to the particular airframe, size, power to weight, pilot, set up, etc.

@acerc @Snoopy1 seems like all three of us have been down the "Ultimate" road to adventure when it comes to a biplane. I too have enjoyed many Ultimate biplanes in years gone by and I agree with ace about the Skybolt being more like a pitts but the one I built was heavy and higher wing loading (at almost 13 pounds and a YS120AC) than the lighter Goldberg Ultimate (My personal Fav and 11 pounds with a YS120SC). I also have flown AeroWorks 50cc and 100cc Ulti's and even the Ginormous Hanger 9 with a Dub 150. The Hanger 9 flew like it was a feather even though it weighed 49 pounds. But the one thing I saw different was not with the two different planes (Pitts/Ultimate) in general but rather the same plane type at a larger scale. I also had a 50% Pitts I got from Desert Aircraft back when the also sold 3W and ModelBaugh ARC airframes. It too flew like it was a feather. I guess "Bigger Flies Better" rings true but none of the big planes regardless of it being the Ulti or Pitts would tumble like their smaller counter parts. And if you are happening to just have to have a really BIG Ultimate ARF that flies really well Then I would recommend the "World Models" Ulti's as well. I have actually owned some of their smaller Ulti ARF's (120 size) and they fly just like the Goldberg kits. Also had a "pull at the sticks" with their 42center and it flew IMHO much like the Hangar9.

When you speak of bigger don't tumble like the smaller one's. Well, they are bigger so the rate of tumble will be slower, larger mass equals larger resistance. But that is also part of why some of us like bigger, we can do the same thing but our slower old brain like's the slower larger mass. I just gave away the little Great Planes Ultimate and it was fast, fast at everything. So this 82" ws PAU one is a little slower which I appreciate and if, or I should say when, I get the bigger 94" ws it will be even easier to keep up with. Woo Hoo!

With that being said I definitely in FULL AGREEMENT :yesss:…….About the "old" brain thing . Now I know why they tumbled to the ground! ........VERY QUICKLY!:ooh?: But hey????? My brain was still young back then o_O

Here's a biplane my father flew with a YS 140 in the cowl . Its a D&S Aeroworks ultimate and hasn'y flew seen 2008 .

It flew very well and have no desire to fly it, I'm keeping it in memory of my father flying years we had with each other.

Still has the old servos airtronics an a Jr ch 52 receiver wish is obsolute along with the Jr 10 transmitter .

Nice looking plane should take the engine off and oil it up and fill the pump with YS oil . I am still flying a 10x in the winter.

Snoopy for sure i can tell you what i learned from my dad flying these engines for six to seven years . Or even get a hold of Richard Verano who would love to help with issues on your YS engine .
