Thanks for the explanation Tony, it's a lot of work, figured there was a personal reason behind it.

S2 Decathlon if I remember correctly, had one from an estate sale that was about 3/4 done but it was so friggin' big and I was a young dad so I sold it.

I have a Pilot 1/4 scale Decathlon kit (what a nice Super D kit!) that I'm hoping to build but it's worth a lot! Hoping to get to it before I need the money from it for something else!

Pilot makes a great kit. I've sold a couple of my MK pattern kits, just can't turn away the high dollar offers.

Yes the S2 Decathlon is a large plane. I found this kit at Toledo several years ago, it is on the shelf waiting. The plans are 3' x 27'. I had copies made several years ago for someone on the universe. The lift struts look just like the photos you posted. Old kits are getting harder and harder to find. Not looking to sell any of mine no matter what the price.

I spent some time at Airliners.net looking at cowl opening because i didn't the way the openings looked. What I found is there are many variations out there. Decided on the plane below.

Made several different patterns starting with the plans and ended up with the bottom shape.

I filled in the original inlets, laid out the center lines for the engine and 2" diameter for the prop hub, then laid out the new openings. Decided didn't like the lube cooler inlet so it is getting filled in and redone. Thankfully the carb inlet is on the center line. Haven't cut the openings yet so it can be revised. What do you think?

Beautiful build! Great info. The Roto 85 opposed twin will be more than enough power for this plane and the sound will be ideal. Have you already checked the fit of the engine in the cowl?

Yes it looks like it will fit, the cowl is wide enough, may need to poke a hole in the firewall for the velocity stack. I was hoping the 170 would fit, but no way.

looks perfect except that opening just below the prop looks like it has a little radius to it on top, yours looks straight
