I heard back from Aircraft Spruce yesterday, looks like my spruce order is 3 weeks out. The message said that spruce orders have a 5 week lead time. With the lag I just might be splitting the cowl into 3 pieces. Still time to think about it. Got the Roto 85-FS drawing blown up today to make sure it will fit, looks good so far.

Ordered 3/32" 1095 spring steel from McMaster Carr, came in 2 days, great shipping. The spring steel arrives in the annealed state so that you can form it to shape and drill. Once that is complete, the steel gets heated and quenched to harden, then tempered to provide toughness. I was able to saw the sheet into strips and form in a vice however could not get any of the curves to match. Plan B, modify the bender to form the tail wheel springs. Still need cut to final shape, drilled and heat treated, this will get done after the tail parts are made, back to work.

Been working off and on over the past few days on the tail wheel. Did a lot of looking at photos and have discovered that there are as many versions of tail wheels as nose bowls. Decided on the Scott 3000 version shown below which matches the service manual drawing. Found a drawing of the leaf springs and discovered that the plans show a 3/4" wide spring while the full scale is 1 1/2" wide. Took a 1/16" off a side on the spring that were already formed. Using a DuBro 2" tail wheel, the wheel below is 6" x 2" so that's perfect. Have everything but the yoke built so photos will be coming later.

The Scott 3200's are very popular here in Southeast AK. You can find rebuild kits for them from ABI (Alaska Bushwheels Inc) and are a direct replacement.
http://www.scott-3200-tailwheel.com/
https://www.airframesalaska.com/ABI-3200S-Scott-Tailwheel-p/abi-3200s.htm
People will modify their Scott tailwheels with the ABI large fork for the 11'' baby bushwheel instead of the whimpy 8" ha ha
And yes... lots of champs on bushwheels, they are a lot cheaper than a cub/supercub and still fun. I should try and find a picture of one here.
You are doing some awesome work and I appreciate you sharing all your building experience.

TonyHallo

Thanks.
From what I can tell, the 3200 was used on later models of the Champ, mid 1950's maybe. There was also a Maule brand used. Don't understand the rime or reason for selecting one over the other. Actually started making a 3200 look-a-like but changed after reviewing the service manual.
