Just giving my measly $0.02 since I know that's about all my opinion is worth, but I've actually had awesome luck using black RTV to make my exhaust gaskets. It's got different properties than the red RTV and holds up a lot better IMO. I've even used the black RTV to plug a smoke nipple hole and it hasn't blown out right away like red RTV would.
This is the same stuff you would use to seal a differential or oil pan.

Every auto parts store should carry it if they're a good parts store. I like to buy the little small tubes (I think it's 2-3oz) as it lasts a while, and I'm not throwing away a huge tube when it inevitably dries out.
I don't know how you play but I have done all of them except removing one from the trash.
