The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

I like 'em "BIG"!
Except...
I’m going to convert it to a super otter and go electric.
Electric?

Did I hear you correct? Did you really say, electric???

I just can't believe my eyes. It looked like you said... electric!!!

Just kidding bro. I think it would be terrific burning molecules of 'lectricity. If it were 90-100 inch, I'd slap ya.
:msn_slap:
Lol. Looking forward to your progress.

Since I have a bit of time (before my radio arrives) I am taking my time getting the CAP 232 EX assembled. Got the guts better organized and the two remote Rx's installed. Lots of room for easy battery change outs. Painted the spinner and cowl front to "clone" my dearly departed :ooh?:.

To be honest, the radial otter was a terrible flying airplane. The turbonized super otter is what made it what it still is today. The sound of a prop twirling around will sound close to a turbine.
I will need to make some floats somehow for it though....
I’m going to mimic a specific color scheme that is still flying here in Juneau. There are maybe ten here.

Electric?

Of course I didn't take any photos but I got my hands on a coworkers 70" Slick and started to work on fixing some things that just weren't right with it. Started off by readjusting the rudder pull pull cables. They had stretched so much over the years that the cable ends were screwed all the way into the ball links on both ends of the cable. Fortunately for me, the servo output shaft was facing rearward, so all I had to do was flip the servo around and readjust the cable ends in the ball links. Nice and taught now.

Both the rudder and elevator servos were mounted hard to the wood. I'm not really into that, plus the screws were driven so deep into the hole in the wood that the unthreaded portion of the shaft was basically just pressed in place with no screw threads hooking into the wood :oblong: Phillips head screws painstakingly removed, holes saturated with thin CA to make the wood swell, grommets/eyelets installed onto servo rails, and finally screwed the servo in place with some nice black hex head screws from TDRC. Everything is nice and sturdy now, and some minor adjustments to the hole positions on the servo horns had the rudder and elevators driving to their limits with most of the servo resolution being used.

Also did up some baffling for the motor and ESC since I recall there was an issue with overheating in the past. Hopefully this will keep it all cool, I may swap the 80 amp ESC out for a higher amperage unit as I recall current figures being very close to 80 amps static. By the way, the Slick is this sweet scheme:

Some times you just gotta step away and let your garage door open because it smells like CA and balsa dust. Third day/afternoon playing with otter and it’s starting to take form. I forgot how addicting a stick build can be. I can’t leave it alone!! But I must!! Lest my sinuses will hate me.

Does not take long even when deliberately taking time to assemble. Looking as if that "dirt nap" never happened :big-grin:.
One thing I am doing different though. Using 3mm hex head servo horn screws and 3mm x 26mm stainless hex head screws for LG, wing attachment and motor mount. Supplied hardware for these areas is a bit cheesy .
