    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

Lots more done today, last night I sheeted the first foam core of the swept wing panel, I now have the leading edge taped to the core so that will be all cured tomorrow. Today I sheeted the second panel, it's now setting with about 500 lbs on it until tomorrow. Also got the center section ready...

You are very welcome JetPainter, Coby is kinda in the middle of a move so he may be hard to get ahold of. His #1 shop help took another job so right now he is also swamped with work, but he is worth the wait for some good CNC hot wire work. Speaking of hot-wire work I have been cutting up my...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

As usual I am very happy with Coby's work with his CNC hot wire. Today I determined where I wanted to place the main gear then placed my hot wire template and cut out for my two plywood gear mount ribs. The scrap foam parts are then used as a perfect template to make the ply ribs for mounting...

Getting more stuff done; All the formers in the fuse are glassed in just to add a bit of strength. The canard bearing bulkhead is also glassed in the nose. I cut out the holes for the canard torque tube fairings, they still need just a bit of final fitting but for now their good. Also mounted...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

Hey Jet, I just spent a few minutes going thru your thread, I like it! A really cool model from spare parts and scratch:way_to_go: Maybe a Red Bull color scheme?

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

Thank you guys, there is a reason that no one else is doing something like this! Remember this is model #2:) The Ascender is a very strange type of airplane, at first glance it looks like a standard canard but it is not really a canard at all. Curtiss designed the thing as a true flying wing...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

Today was a good bit of progress, I got the canard bearing former epoxied in place. It was a challenge to get it all square and true but I came up with an easy method. I used a rubber band to keep the stick pulled up against the inside of the nose, and with slow cure epoxy I could take the time...

Here is the story Ace, I ended up missing first place by just 1.6 points, if Brenda had not missed calling the loop in my first round I would have won first place in designer scale, it figures this was the first time she ever missed calling a maneuver & she feels awful about it, oh well:( My...

    Scale NAT's 2016 anybody?

Thank you Bart but it was no problem, I'm sorry I did not get more photos on Saturday but flying three rounds makes for a full day of flying. I ended up missing first place by just 1.6 points, if Brenda had not missed calling the loop in my first round I would have won first place, it figures...

    Scale NAT's 2016 anybody?

Was kinda busy today, we ended up flying 3 rounds due to the weather forecast for tomorrow. It was HOT this afternoon, with the winds shifting around being light and variable. There were a few casualties today, one big twin model came apart in the air due to a wing center section failing, and...

    Scale NAT's 2016 anybody?

It was a full day today at the field, and it was just a practice flying and static judging day! I'll post a bunch of photos for you in no particular order, everything from the registration to static judging with both the R/C & control line scale guys. Tomorrow we fly the first two rounds of...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

Once you have the plug in the parting board and you are happy with where it's sitting then you need to seal the edges with clay. I use a plastic putty knife to get a nice sharp corner along the edge where the plug meets the parting board. Don't worry if you have a bit of a gap between the pug...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

Glad that some of this stuff is useful, I have continued to experiment and improve my process every mold is a improvement. The next step is to build the parting board, this is nothing fancy but it needs to be as flat as you can make it in order to give you a nice straight parting flange. I...

After a good final block sanding with 80 grit paper you are ready for the next step, Dura-Tec. This a a special stuff designed just for plugs and mold making. It will spray right over your 80 grit sanding marks and you'll never know it. I spray the stuff on really thick, this will allow you to...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

If you are thinking that this process takes a bit of Bondo, then you would be correct, it took 6 full gallons to do this plug. Even doing the strip planking a 1/4 inch below the mold line takes about 50lbs of Bondo when you are at this point.

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

One important side note; After you get to this point and are happy with the overall shape you will find that you have sanded down to the plywood cross sections in lots of spots. This is how you can tell that you are getting close to the right shape, your cross sections will start to appear as...

    Scale Curtiss XP-55 Ascender

I am glad that this is helping you out, making your own glass parts is a bunch of fun and there is no limit to the possibilities. The next step in making your fuse plug is to decide on how you want to make the wing fillets. I opted to incorporate the Ascender's huge fillets into the fuse mold...
