FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

No. I'm just saying that Section 336 was intended to keep certain core elements of the hobby off limits from FAA regulations. FAA interpreted the section in a very extreme way and basically used the language in that paragraph to make a very narrow interpretation of the language legal, while...

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

...besides, I think you have better luck with lawmakers. The FAA has already told us to eff off, so complaining to them has very little impact. Complain to the ones whose orders they are disobeying instead.

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

Yes they are, but keep in mind that these are the same guys who actually voted and approved section 336. My letters to senators and congressmen probably won't move the needle, but it cost me 10 minutes and a few mouse clicks, so I might as well do it. Plus, if a lot of us reach out to these...

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

Here's what Senator Bob Menendez will be getting in his inbox: Dear Senator Menedez! As I'm sure you recall, a couple of years ago, both chambers of Congress passed a law that's known as the "2012 FAA Modernization and Reform Act". This law deals with a wide range of aviation related issues...

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

I wonder how "airport" is defined, BTW. One of my club has a small general aviation field without a control tower about 4 miles away. Does that constitute an airport in this context? What do the pros like Enterprise and GYRO think?

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

Oh this is getting more interesting by the second. Apparently, the ruling affects Amazon's plans to use delivery drones and Amazon now enters the fray and challenges the FAA.

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

Nope. The FAA covered that too: Finally, based on the plain language of the statute, which says that aircraft must be “flown within the visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft,” an operator could not rely on another person to satisfy the visual line of sight requirement. See...

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

Actually, it's pretty clear that the interpretation bans FPV googles. (Full document here: http://02b954f.netsolhost.com/docs/model_aircraft_spec_rule.pdf) By definition, a model aircraft must be “flown within visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft.” P.L. 112-95, section...

    Aerobeez 88" Slick 540 v2 (50cc)

BTW, I think I figured out why it was dying in inverted spins and blenders. I have a blown cylinder gasket, so it was probably sucking air. Plus, it reduces the pressure pulses responsible for actuating the fuel pump. Bad fuel pressure + air leaks = poor performance, methinks.

    DA50 dying in blenders

Just talked to DA. They're sending me a new gasket.

Hmmm... This looks like a blown head gasket to me....

If you look really close on the landing picture, you'll see that the elevator halves have different deflection. The port one was unplugged at that point. I'm surprised how well it flew on one elevator half!

In fact, I think bmschulman is a member here. He's probably busy discussing this all over the place, but who knows, he may stop by.

Yes, and the lawyer representing the modeler is a friend of a friend. I will ask my friend to get his opinion on this.

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

probably not, since the raffle isn't connected to the demo. It would surprise me a lot off the FAA would send inspectors to fun flys... Also, don't most team pilots get paid in free or discounted stuff?

FAA 2014-0396- interpretation of new rule for Model Aircraft

...so I think Aron is right. Team pilots who get paid to appear in a flight demo video are now required to have some kind of license.

Page seven of the interpretation document. It also bans aerobatic demonstrations for money.
