    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

Now that is a mill! Hope you have a big truck! You're going to have a real nice shop. Have any idea of the weight?

    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

I tried a table on my drill press many years ago. I was milling steel and the results were less than ideal. I would image that aluminum and plastic would work however. The drill press lacks the mass and rigidity needed.

Don't get too hung upon threading, for the type of work we do you can just use a die. I single pointed one thread on my lathe in the past 16+ years!

I keep my keys and live centers mounted on the lathe back splash, as for speed I use the 400 rpm for most applications. Leave the key ther once and start the lathe, you will not forget again! I see your lathe is Vevor brand, just found them recently.

Quick up date on the mill. Adding 3 axis DRO and power feed on the x axis. Purchased the DRO from Vevor, $180 includes the display and scales along with the R8 collet holder . I have the X and Y axis scales installed and waiting for aluminum to finish off the Z axis. The scales supplied are...

The 30% Chipmunk cowl is big, almost 12" wide. That may be my next build after the Cherokee.

Scale Nelitz 1/3 scale Cub build

A 2mm screw will be about the same size as a #2 servo screw. That is a weak spot on planes like the Cub and Champ. My Champ cracked in that area on a harder than normal landing, ended up milling a slot and epoxied in a 1/8" piece of music wire, did both sides, thankfully it is hidden under the...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Switched the efforts to the canopy plug while the epoxy cures. What a pain, the primer just clogs the 320 dry sandpaper. Sand a few strokes then clean the paper out with a slap of a putty knife. Would rather wet sand but worried about getting the balsa wood structure wet.

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

I finally got around to marrying the fin to the fuselage. How much easier the laser level makes things especially on these round shaped fuselages. The tail post is long and is inserted into a slot on the fuselage. The mating surfaces were painted with the unthicken epoxy so that it would...

    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

Here are old and new shots. Still got a ways to go. I had to disassemble the head so that I could lift it onto the column, decided to replace the bearings in the spindle pulley shaft, felt a little stiff, I think it was the 42 year old grease. All the other bearing feel good. I may take the...

Not yet, I have the base, table and column in place, trying to determine it's resting place.

    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

It does, trying to post it on Craig's list but can't seem to log it. I took it apart today and have the new base and column in place. Need a mag base drill to drill the mounting holes now. The old column was 2 5/8" x 3/16" wall, new column is 3 5/8" x 5/8" wall. New neighbor that moved in...

Picked up a new to me Mill/Drill, Wholesale Tool KDM 15. Built in 1980, made in Taiwan, stlll has the cosmoline on it. Just a little bigger than mine but much more robust. It is in pieces in the back of my van. Need to get mine out of the way and start to build the new one in it's place...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Spent the winter looking at the plug for the windshield, it was in the garage where the setting sun would cast shadows. Really didn't care for the shape so a quart of Bondo putty and I'm happier with the shape of it. Couple coats of primer and a guide coat and it may be ready for color coat...
