Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I spent some time at Airliners.net looking at cowl opening because i didn't the way the openings looked. What I found is there are many variations out there. Decided on the plane below. Made several different patterns starting with the plans and ended up with the bottom shape. I filled in...

I screw or nail the parts down to the bench. When the build is over the bench gets sanded and varnished.

Scale 1/3 Scale Extra 330L Build.

Balsa has a hard time arguing with 2"x3" weights. Mine are 6" long and need to be careful where they are used.

Yes the S2 Decathlon is a large plane. I found this kit at Toledo several years ago, it is on the shelf waiting. The plans are 3' x 27'. I had copies made several years ago for someone on the universe. The lift struts look just like the photos you posted. Old kits are getting harder and...

Yes that's all I do, civilian. Cherokee 140, Balsa USA Super Cub, Bob Godfrey One Design, Frank Knoll One Design, Frank Knoll 37% Christan Eagle, Cessna Float Plane, Byron Glasair. Planes on deck, Great Planes Piper Tomahawk, Sig Mossey Bravo, S3 Decathlon (Another Oldie). As you can see I...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I always wanted one since seeing it on the cover of RCM in 1991. I like odd stuff, off the beaten path. When you go to a fly in, there is a very good chance you will see a cub, heck two years ago we had 6 Cubs in the air at one time during our Summer Solstice fly in. There were no Champs to be...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Cut out the former for the cowl and glassed it in with epoxy and 6 oz. bias cut cloth. Boy how things have changed, the plans show the former being 1/2" thick with a 3/4" firewall behind it. The former used was 3/32" thick. The cowl shape was quite a bit different from the former on the...

Scale Nelitz 1/3 scale Cub build

Still confused about the door opening. The upper tube is right at the split between the door and window?

Or just shorten a cheap set of Hobby King cans. There is only one baffle plate inside this muffler. Haven't flow this yet so don't know how it will sound but the volume will help anyway.

Sometime you got to make it fit. This worked very well. This was in a Bob Godfrey One Design with a ZDZ 80J.

You are getting faster with coped ends, what process did you end up with? Both sides look the same, how about the door?

Have a cheap set from HF, not sure why they are rarely used? Might give them a try again.

Scale 1/3 Scale Extra 330L Build.

The span was around 100", I used a 3 view for the overall dimensions and designed it similar to a Hurley Extra. The wings and stab were foam rib design. Started life with a ZDZ 80J with a JMB can. After a few years put a D&B 85 twin in and proceeded to destroy it on the first flight of the...

My tail didn't look as good as the real one however. The radius porvides a very nice feature. Would be a pain to cover however.

Scale 1/3 Scale Extra 330L Build.

Here are photos of an Extra 200 that I modeled some time ago. You can see the fairing provides a radius on the top of the stab that blends the vertical into the horizontal to center of the leading edge, the bottom appears to be sharp angle.

That makes sense, get the sides pulled in evenly then add the gussets.

Scale Need advice on trailing edge aileron & flap bow on BUSA 1/3 Super Cub

OK I understand now. It's not flat. In the past I used ammonia the short side, weighted the bow just past flat and let it dry, might take a few tries,

Got the spines cut out and lighten for the stab, elevator and rudder. The overall weight reduction was 30%, got tired of cleaning out the hole saws! Used "Seetemp" for transferring the outlines to the lite ply. The resulting thickness will be 1/2" once the 3/16" spruce is glued on to each...
