It's the way the plane came when I got it! I fly for 15, and usually have 12+ left in the tank

Lol- at least you know you'll likely never run out of gas with that tank! I've seen lots of guys squeeze 2 16 oz fourtitude tanks on the 89 for their smoke setups..

I should post a picture of it up. I run a 26oz flask in mine. Lol That's right a flask.

I got to thinking a while back. I sure would like to mount my fuel tank under the wing spar, so that the cg doesn't change as I fly. So while I was waiting to get my motor rebuilt from DA I went a on a search for a fuel tank to fit this requirement. The biggest one was the height, I had to find something less than 1-1/2" tall. There are a few premade tanks out there that would fit underneath the spar, but they were all very small capacities. Something like this could work if I was to gang they up. And no matter what style I used really couldn't get more than about 16oz.

Since people started using Fiji and coke bottles, my search continued to the grocery store. I searched the isles up and down looking for something that would work. I got a few weird looks as I would pick up bottles and measure them with a tape measure. Lol. I found a few decent candidates in the store. A 32oz. bottle of Listerine and a 26 oz. bottle of Dawn.

The Listerine was a good rectangular shape. But was a little larger than I wanted and would have been a real tight squeeze if I wanted a good layer of foam underneath it. Next was the bottle of Dawn. This one would fit under good, but was an odd shape. It's oval and tapered at the top. Wasn't sure how well it would work in flight, especially 3D.

Still not satisfied I got to thinking. Where could I find a tall slim bottle? Then it hit me. Liquor! I remember when I was younger getting those cheap plastic bottles of McCormics vodka. So off to the liquor store I went. I went to Spec's cause they have a huge selection. First place I stopped was the flask area. But almost everything there was glass, except for the cheap crap. The best thing I found was a bottle of what else. McCormics vodka, but it was only a pint (16oz.). I really wanted something a little larger, but this was my backup. So I went up and down the isles, and found a 26 oz. plastic translucent travel flask. And it was just about the perfect size. So I bought it.

To complete the install I bought a water bottle cap kit from pspmfg.com. Because the cap that fit in the flask wasn't a standard size soda cap. Drilled out the cap installed the kit, you actually need a few more parts than what comes in that kit. (I'll post them up when I get home.). And put it in the plane. I've only got about 8 flights on it so far, waiting for that motor to break in a little better before I do some testing to see if things like hovering are the same at the beginning of the flight and at the end of the flight. But so far I like it.

Alright so here's some pics.

I used the PSP mfg. "Fuel Tank Cap for Water Bottle Application" P/N:pt# W101 http://www.pspmfg.com/WaterBottleFuelTankCap.html

The Sullivan "Universal Fuel Stopper" P/N:S449 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTXR0&P=7

The Flask P/N:8055, http://www.franmara.com/product.php?p_id=196&c_id=490&navi_id=5. It's not see thru like a coke bottle or a Fortitude, but it is translucent just like a Dubro tank.

And some brass tubing, Viton Fuel Line, and the Clunk I had.

You may be able to forgo the PSP and stopper for this kit, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?I=LXBWL6&P=8. Although I can't tell from the picture if the cover piece is solid and fat like the PSP part or if it's more cup like. Probably won't work if it's like a cup.

I drilled a hole thru the cap to the size of the smaller diameter of the stopper. Get it assembled loosely. screw the cap on. Then tighten up the screw that runs thru the middle of the stopper.

Also I ran the brass line to about the half way point of the bottle and bent it to hug the top of the bottle. Just so that the clunk will always fall down in normal flight. Because of the slight curved shape of the bottle.

that looks like a great setup...thanks for the pics...I really like the idea that you can get the tank right over the wing spar at the center of the CG.
nice low profile tank...looks pretty sturdy.

dumb question but I assume the plastic flask will stand up to having gasoline in it?

Yes the gasoline is no problem. I put some in there and let it sit for a few days to see what happened. No softening or discoloration of the plastic. The walls of the bottle are as thick if not a little thicker than the walls on a Dubro tank.

Pretty cool setup!! What motor are you running? I don't think you will need to put the tank that far back.
