78'' Extra

70cc twin V2
Looks great, I just wish I had known about this engine when I sold the 78 to Darren. After the Syssa, Hacker, and Mintor 38's, I just gave up on the "30cc" class.

I love my 60's but I think that late next year I will transition to a certain 7X" EF plane with a DA 35 on an ES35 as my beater plane. The momentum, flight time, and lack of charging is just awesome.

With the 60 Laser and 91 Yak on the way, I don't need more planes. But flying Darren's 78 made me really want another one.

so do you think if i copied Hone's setup that would be a pretty good first gasser? or should i skip 30cc and go to 50.

cant wait till i can have a 7x size plane for a beater :D

Probably. We have a pretty small sample size on the 40 twin so far though...the one I have seen has been fantastic but it's just one. Hopefully they are all as good as Matt's!

The issues with the DLE 35 are pretty well known so you can hopefully avoid them with a little prevention.

There are a number of people that plan to install them on the 3dhs "bigfoot" that should begin shipping next week. I follow the thread on rcgroups for that plane, and at least 3-4 people bought the twin 40 for it. So hopefully that sample size will get a good bit larger very soon. I'm eagerly watching them. The 40 twin sure seems like a nice match to the 78" Extra and eventually the MXS...

I agree. It is a cool motor for sure. Smooth, low weight, great throttle response and power curve, inexpensive, reliable. Almost sounds too good to be true!

Still have to cut the cowl some more but here are some pics

Joe, those are awesome pics and that looks like a great combo. Love how the 40 fits in the cowl. Only thing I have a question about is the spinner gap. From the side view pic it looks like a good 1/4" to 1/2" spinner gap...am I seeing that correctly? Do you have the motor that far forward for balancing requirements?

I sense bidding wars!!!! Who's going to open the bidding? Gary, Cody? Sorry, Im flyin this one for a while.
I believe a few of us have said over the past year that the 70x/ 30-40cc gas class will be emerging and become the "go to" class. Read- 38 challenge. It is a perfect class now that, with mods created by trial and error and testing made by some (sorry Gary H, you got the "been there, tried that, and that, hated it." Award!), there are reliable power plants. I know my fleet is all ready being readjusted.
"The momentum, flight time, and lack of charging is just awesome." Amen Cody!
As I've been saying since the first start- fill it, flip it, fly it- Fun! No muss no fuss. Of course they are susceptible to failure and issues but in my brief experience, a little preemptive preparation and mods leads to success. I realize I have a narrow sample group but am considering friends experiences too.
I think our design friends at EF and 3DHS and others are seeing that the 7x" 30 cc gas market is quickly challenging the 6x" electrics.
Bring em on boys!

I'm using the provided standoffs which are giving me a little more than 1/4'' gap. I'm going to leave the spinner off for now though, i'll put it on if i need it for balance. If you get the engine to the recommended distance from the firewall the spinner gap ends up being quite big.

Hopefully i have it flying by next week.

I had to get Patrick (gunsmith) to custom drill and cut a Tru-turn spinner to fit for mine. Sadly I won't fly mine much in the next few weeks as the airframe is for sale and I have the 15cc, PTE-72, Drastik programming, and another wing reinforcing project to wade through, and oh Bigfoot as well. I do love my projects and I have help on most of these. I think I might be clear of some of these once the 78s are back in stock, and I seem able to build EF planes quicker than some others for some reason.

I have a GT33 already broken in for Bigfoot. Also this will be flown at a lot of different sites and noise is a issue at some. Nothing is as quiet stock as the OS and the throttle response is plain stellar.

I have my own share of Hobby Services horror stories so I know your pain on the GTs.
