I got some goodies in the mail today. My DLE 120 came in, Falcon29X9 prop, and J&J tail wheel.

I set the incidence on the stabs today and I installed the J&J tail wheel, and then I started laying the elevators so I could cut them out. I will go in more detail on how I cut them out in another post.

I like use masking tape on the sheeting when I lay it the surfaces to be cut. I don't have a bandsaw big enough to cut my surfaces so I use a razor saw. When I laid out the surfaces I deviated from the plans because I wanted to counter balance the elevators. I went 4-1/2" wide on the counter balance. I also went with 3/16" of a gap when I cut the sides of the counter balance. The reason I did this is I will sheet the ends with 1/16" sheeting and the 1/16" gap that will be in between that will be good after the surfaces are covered.

I used the razor saw to cut everything out. I just followed the lines that I marked on the masking tape. One other thing that the masking tape does is help keep the sheeting from splintering. The razor saw is not wide enough to cut everything from the same side because the foam is so thick so you have cut from both sides. Even cutting from both sides I couldn't get all the way through the foam so I had to use my razor knife to cut all the way through the foam.

I used my sanding table for the first time today and boy what a difference it made when I was doing some sanding and cutting the foam, I should have built one of these a long time ago.

I have to admit that I'm struggling with how to cut the bevel's for my throws. I usually just glue the stock to my surfaces and sand my angles, but the foam is 2-1/4" wide and the wood I will use is 1/2" thick by 2-1/4" wide, that is a lot of sanding for my angles. How are you guys doing your bevels?

Nice work. I cheat with my bandsaw......I can only cut part of the cuts before I get restricted with throat depth. So I remove the blade, turn it inside out and install it backwards. The first time I did this the guides on there made a lot of noise so I put a crappy blade on to wear them in. Since I've done a half dozen airplanes now it sounds the same either way. I would not recommend this and would absolutely NOT do it if cutting solid wood or heavy cutting but for balsa sheeted foam it does in fact work.
