Sport CARF Pitts - Engine Upgrade

I got the CG done... but I may change a few things up still. I knew the 3W with cans would be heavier. I didn't figure into the equation the extra weight of canister mounts, headers, couplers, etc.. The plane with the Moki had 45.5 pounds on the main wheels. With the 3W, that went up to...

The resident smart-ass at our field waited until after that landing to ask me that question... Duh!

I'm still trying to get my undies cleaned out... that was not a fun landing.

Are you going to register with the FAA? Cast Your Vote!

Without sending you guys through all of the details... lets agree that our aircraft DO come under the guidelines of section 336 (they are model aircraft)... with that understood, here's an excerpt from this week's FAA ruling..... However, the prohibition against future rulemaking is not a...

Petitioning AMA members for separation from drones

I think everyone received that email this afternoon... unfortunately, I think their basis is useless. They're complaining about conflicts with Section 336 (still), and the FAA was very clear that those guidelines applied to the craft, while this week's ruling was limited to the airspace...

Petitioning AMA members for separation from drones

This week's ruling applies to HOBBYIST aircraft use. Soon, I think we can expect even tougher rulings that require certification for every single craft used for commercial purposes. The FAA was pretty clear in separating those 2 categories in their ruling.

Petitioning AMA members for separation from drones

Guys... the FAA isn't side-stepping section 336. Those rules deal with the ownership, design and building of model aircraft. The FAA's ruling, like it or not, deals only with the AIRSPACE that those aircraft fly in. I don't think anyone can reasonably deny the FAA's need and ability to govern...

Sport CARF Pitts - Engine Upgrade

I'm back in town, but it's a rainy Thursday in Atlanta. I'll try to get an idea this afternoon about how many changes I need to make to get the plane CG'd. The 3W weighs almost a pound more, then the cans are just over a pound. To make it lighter, I've removed about a half pound on the nose by...

I don't know if I'm going to put smoke back on it or not. I have all the parts, but I'm not a big fan of pumping smoke oil into canisters. They gat gummed up fast enough on their own. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

OK... fixed it, it's public now. I didn't want to spend half the week in Mexico wondering if I could get the motor tuned in... so after the end of the crappy football game, I took the plane back out in the yard. 3W says to start the high and low needles on both carbs at 1 1/4, so I started...

Sport CARF Pitts - Engine Upgrade

I think I found the problem (I wish the Atlanta Falcons could find their problem). I noticed earlier that the rear carb choke arm wasn't moving as far as the forward arm. So, the first thing I wanted to do was look at that. Loosening the bolts and twisting just a little seemed to resolve...

Sport CARF Pitts - Engine Upgrade

Crap.... Tried to get the plane started, it finally did start, ran fairly smooth, but only on 2 cylinders. I checked the plugs, wet. Fuel is getting to the carb. I swapped plug wires and ignition modules, still no fire on the back. So, the ignition modules seem to be firing properly, but...

Nothing extravagant.... Maybe some cellphone video of it running. I need to wait an hour or so to avoid nasty stares from the neighbors.

Well.... I think it's time to start cranking on the motor! All connections are checked, the tail is back on the plane, and its fueled up. The only question is are the ignition modules reversed? If it doesn't fire after 10 flips or so on choke, I'll switch them. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
