Here is how I do my wheel pants.
1. Grind away the pants material around the 2 landing gear mounting screws so the axle does not touch the wheel pants, the two 3mm screws will hold the pants in place.
2. I use a ¼” laminated ply that is 2” x 3” drilled with a hole that is a bit larger than the axle. The wood is glued in place using the axle as your guide to locate its place. The purpose of this is the axle will ride within the wood supporting the wheel pant area away from the LG.
3. I thin out some 30 minute epoxy and brush it within the pants for strength. While the epoxy is still wet, I add paper towel to the area above the wheel then brush the epoxy into the towel, this gives strength to the pants and help tie everything together, picture #5.
4. I use the prop adopters that come with APC props to shim out the tire/wheel so it is centered with in the wheel pants.
5. I grind a flat on the axle for the 2 wheel collars set screws to sit on; the set screws are Loctite in place.
6. With the wood in place the tire/wheel is sandwiched between the gear and the wood and the tire/wheel will not fall out even if the set screws loosen.
The whole thing may add about an ounce or so but the pants will last longer and there is no loss of wheels.
